1020 Throw Out Bearing Replacement

Hello,

I have a 1020 with a Model 47 loader and sometimes when I let the clutch out I hear a knocking sound. To me it sounds like it is coming from under the gear shift levers. I am assuming it is the throw out bearing going bad. I tried to grease the bearing but have not been able to get it to take any grease. I am also assuming the only way to correct the problem is to split the tractor and replace it. Correct?

With that being said what kind of stands are uaed to split this type of tractor? Does anyone know where I can purchase a set of these stands? Or have plans to build a set? Finally does anyone have any words of advice on how to go about this project?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a concrete floor to split it and do you have any help? Take your loader off as it just makes it much easier to work on and a 47 loader comes off easy. I take the drawbar out and turn them around and put a large bolt with a few washers thru the hole and use a floor jack to support and roll the back half away. For the front half half use a hyd. jack under the back of the engine. Go up to the front end and wedge a board on top the front end on both sides of the front housing(under your side screens) this keeps it from pivoting. Add some extra jack stands or blocks under the oil pan or side rails for safety. Also add a bolt or a clamp back at the rear of the drawbar so it can not slide out of the rear carrier. While apart check the rear engine seal for leaks. You should invest in a Deere tech. manual before starting this job. Check Ebay as often they are more reasonable than a Deere dealer. I have a splitting stand with wheels that we use but the above will work. You can make a simple frame yourself if you have a welder as well. Just bring two angle iron pieces down from your framerails on the side of your engine and add a cross piece about 4-5 feet long. You should also add a brace so it can not pivot. For height you can add blocks of wood for shims. When putting back together do not force anything and do not draw it together with bolts. Just take your time and be careful and use plenty of blocks or stands. Tom

TO bearing only comes into play when you have your big waffle stomper left foot depressing the clutch pedal...

If it's "knocking" WITHOUT a heavy foot on the clutch pedal, the TO bearing isn't the issue.

I do have a big foot, but if the knocking with the clutch pedal released where should I look next?

Thanks Tom for your very descriptive post! I have a reproduction manual that I bought from here, yesterday tractor, is there another version out there? Could you send me a couple of pictures of the splitting stands you use? If you don't want to post them here I can provide you with an email address.

Thanks,

Possibly, there's a loose, worn, or out of adjustment release finger, or a clip or spring is missing from a finger (depending upon what clutch you have).

If you have a continuous PTO, the splines in the clutch cover and matching PTO drive splines could be worn and clanging around.

My 1020 makes a knocking sound too but only when clutch is pushed down part way. If I stomp it down all the way to make the pto clutch release, the noise will go away. It has been that way for years and is still going.

It is what I believe is referred to as the two stage clutch. When you let the clutch out 1/2 way the PTO will engage but the tractor doesn't move.

Here are my stands.
