Thinking of changing motors on 1 of my 1030's and was wondering whick of the 504 engine tractors I should get one from? Also are the engines from the salvage yrds reliable when they show the oil pressure at idle and full throttle on there ads?Any one have experience changing to a 504 or could I change to a 870 engine with less hassel?I know this question has been asked a thousand times before so thankyou for any help you can offer!!Thanks,Dave A(Minn)

I was at a indoor tractor pull one time,In came this 1030 to pull, i sitting just right i could hear the exhaust, i knew darn well it wasnt the original 1030 sound, well when he hooked to the sled he did good, but i went to the back to talk to him, after wards, he was about 25 yr old guy, he had put in a 2670 engine, with very few modifications, so that's one option, and i know thats too big if you want to use the 1030 for a farming tractor. But keep your eyes open for a 504, talk to the people that owned it, or drove it.

Best option would be a 451 or 504 from a 70 series tractor. You can't use an 870 engine, since it's a 4 cylinder, and you would have a real short hood! You will need to make some throttle linkage, and drill a hole for the steering shaft at the front of the block. It's close to a bolt-in deal, with a few little things to change.

We put a 504 out of a 4490 in a 1030, pretty easy job. Very little grinding, cut a hole for steering, and some linkage work for throttle. Makes good power and drives nice
