1066 possible purchase

Hey there, I am not familiar with IH products, but am interested in a local tractor to purchase to mow and bale hay. It's really too big for what I need, but it looks like an honest 1972 1066, with only a few issues. First it leaks just a little at the bottom of the rock shaft, and there are some dents on the top of the fenders that may not come out during body work. The tractor has 7900 hours on it. When first started it smoked alittle, but when I drove it, at higher rpm that seemed to go away. Everything seemed to work on the tractor, and the owner is asking. 10,000. I feel this is fair, but I'm concerned about the hours on the machine. The pump is black, and has probably been replaced with a rebuilt one. I will only put about 60-80 hours on this tractor a year, so if this tractor has not been rebuilt How long do they generally go before rebuild? Also all the parts still easy to get for the. 1066. Any thoughts on the 1066 would be appreciated. Thank you LH

Well with those hours i am sure that the engine has been done at least once and had a clutch and T/A at some point . The rock shaft seals can be a challenge to change and sometimes they are not that big of a deal. Myself i would want to pull the hyd. filter and see what i find there and any extra pieces and parts layen in the filter housing and how the oil looks . If it is sparkly then your looking at some big time repairs . I woulld also check the hyd. system buy the best you could do is a pressure check, where i can do a GPM flow test. I would check the T/A and this you can do by taking it for a drive where you can get it up in high third or forth and load the tractor with both brakes and bring the engine down under load down to around 15-1800 RPM and pull the T/A into low , NOW one word of caution have your left foot ready to push the clutch down if the tractor just plum stops dead in it's tracks once pulled back into low because the low side just may grab hard . If it does a smooth shift into low then the T/A is doing it's job but if it stops then the low side is out and will cost ya big bucks to replace . Check and see if the engine has a water filter system on it as this will add years to the cylinder sleeves . If it does not the the sleeves can and will pin hole and leak coolant into the cylinders and crank case. Check for a sloppy ft. end . This can be repaired with a check book , Check shift linkage , this to can be fixed with a check book . Now my Hmo here is this tractor is 3 grand over priced and maybe 4 grand over priced.
