1070 Case Prospect

Ok so here goes.......Farmall/Deere guy from a B w/#5 sickle mower - M farmall, 400 Farmall, 560 Farmall, 706 Farmall, 856 Farmall, 1066 IH, and well still hanging onto the old German powered 706 but no AC and wanting to upgrade.

My cousin has a 1070 case the only has 3200 hours on chassis/engine. He went through the trannie on it and well got it back together and is plain ole burnt out on it and wants to unload it - we are close and he wouldn't burn me and I totally understand his place - burned myself out on things as well - so its getting low pressure in 2nd n 3rd power shift is symptom after rebuild. He is thinking maybe clutch pack adjustments, or maybe linkage? He didn't know how to do the CP adjustments evidently.

I am looking for a tractor to run a 15' batwing and pull a 15 to 20 foot disk with - seem like it would be big enuff for that - and I want to get into a tractor with A/C in the cab so would be willing to invest in this unit with known issues. Looking for opinions on the 1070, are they descent once fixed? are they reliable/start good in winter?

How about cab noise, provided I put in new seals etc......are they any louder than an 06/56 series Farmall cab?

thoughts?

Or should I spend a little more and get an 86 series IH?

Dad bought a 1070 in fall of 73, i think.
Tan colored. At that time quietest cab on
market. I think deere soundgard came out the
next year. I think it was quieter.

Much quieter than any IH til the 86 series.
If you get the trany working they are a
great tractor. You must run case/ih hytran
oil in the rear, and if you do it will out
last you. The engines are great starters if
they are in shape, our 970 would start at
-30 without help when new. If it is tired it
takes an engine heater. A good solid 110 ho
tractor. I would start by checking the shift
valves for propper adjustment, they are on
top of the trany and accessible through the
cab floor.

well unfortunately it sounds like from talking to an old case mechanic its going to have to come apart, something about a leak inside the powershift and how it slows down the lift arms - my cousin took apart and attempted with only a part manual - I guess some main shaft sheered bolts off coupler and dropped shaft into bottom of trannie.......so that is why he took apart at only 3200 hours - spent 2700 in parts and over 300 in fluid so now he isn't feeling so inclined to splitting it again - we are thinking it is probably something with some tubes/o ring on the number 2 and 3 positions - not sure what that all means other than not something I could ever feel comfortable tackling I have not idea how to even get one split in too!!! - not many good case power shift mechanics left these days it seems - one out in Kansas that I found a couple hundred miles away and with no way to haul that seems a little daunting of a road trip on ag tires - so we sit and ponder - maybe I can talk my cousin into help disassemble and pay for the mechanic to come to us?

If he went through the power shift he ought to know there is no clutch pack adjustment. I would question if he assembled it correctly.

well I guess I am going to take a pass, too many anomalies and scenarios this could run into not to mention lots of unknown costs $$$ for even repairing it and hauling it to a person who is familiar with them. I found someone willing to work on it about 200 miles away one way.

2 Case/IH dealers said they just don't work on them much anymore and don't really have a good technician suited for it. Not to mention the Time/Hours for cracking tractor apart including cab portion as well.

- Just not feeling it with the lack of technical support from dealers in the area who most are not familiar with the nuiances of these powershifts and you truly have to find an OLD case technician that would be suited /trained to repair it properly.

Think I will stick with a newer case/ih or a mechanical tractor such as the 86 series - granted they aren't perfect but more reliable than a 1070 from what I read and hear.

I can get plenty of support on the IH 86 - 88 and newer series, of course a 7110-7120 is on the wish list but that aint happening they are very pricey :-( From everyone here those seem to be the cats meow........

My biggest requirement is a cab w/air n heat - it will be mainly used for batwing mowing - large areas of CRP - not a lot of shifting like loader work, I have a skid steer for that.

I would like something quiet enough and dust free enough it doesn't flare up my asthma. I have to mow with a respirator on my dads 706 w/cab as it has no air and have to drive with the doors open. Same with my buddies 2-105 White, air doesn't work, heck the stupid fan doesn't even work on it, cant say I have a lot of regard for that white, it needs constant repairs, overheats easily, electrical gremlins, fuel leaks, water pump leak, hydraulic pump issues/lift arm issues, pto issues, only thing that seems to work on it is the engine, its a perkins. Not particularily fond of how the Agco dealer has treated my buddy with that unit either since he purchased it - think I will definitely stick with IH I have had good luck with those in my life - grew up farming with many and rarely did we have issues of anything substantial.

Any thoughts outside of the 86 series, I think the 88s are basically the same mechanical unit just shifter relocation mainly?

I don't think the powershift came in until the 7100 series did it?

I like the sounds of that 18speed they look nice and seem to be reliable from reviews.
