1086 Fuse Block

Working through some electrical/lighting issues on 1978 1086 and down to the fuse block itself as the main culprit. Corrosion from 40+ years is certainly not helping seems the resistance is heating up the fuse to the point it is melting it even with all LED lights in place of the halogens.

Replacement seems to be the best long term option but with a list price of $140 (107356C3) it has me wondering if there are better alternatives. Has anyone gone away from this glass type fuse holder all together to something like circuit breakers?

I realize the tractor owes us nothing for that many years of work and definitely worth the cost of the replacement part, just thinking this many years ahead there seems like there would be some better replacement options that an open exposed fuse panel like that.

If you go to a fuse box with the spade plug fuse there are circuit breakers you can get to go in the box. They come in various amperage's too. I also believe there are some for the round glass fuses if you look a bit. Mostly in truck parts houses they will be easier to find.

What i HAVE DONE AND STILL DO Is i do away with the old Buss fuses and now i install self resetting breakers . I use sold mount just like you will find in a semi and i also break up the factory light wiring and install relays and use the light switch as a trigger taking the load off of it . Head lights and rear red highway tail light go on one relay with it's own breaker and field work lights go on there own relay and breaker and anything else that requires a fuse get's it's own breaker and relay if needed . all connections go on the studs on the breaker. I feed the hot side of all breakers with a common wire off the hot post on the solenoid , here you can protect a # 6 wire with a breaker in the fifty to sixty amp range , the rest amp range will be in the fifteen to twenty amp range .

Years ago IH came out with a supposedly improved fuse block that has stronger clips for the glass fuses. I put one of these new and improved blocks in my 1086 but it did not help. I still needed to carry a spare fuse or fuses and a flashlight in the cab to avoid feeling my way home for another fuse in the dark middle of the night.
