1086 Shifting

I have been looking through some forums but I can find the answer I'm looking for. I have got a 1086 new Clutch, T/A and a couple gears. I have got my clutch freeplay the way I want it, and still working on adjusting the dump valve and trans brake. How hard do these tractors down shift? It shifts great from high low and reverse and speeds 1-4, but you have to be about at a stop to down shift from 4-3 and so on. IS that normal? Need a lesson on shifting these tractors correctly. Thank you.

"correct" shifting procedure for range and speed transmissions: keep your hand off the gear shift until you have come to a complete stop.
that being said, if you are really good at synchronizing the transmission, it can be done.

OK. I also read that when moving forward your not supposed to push the clutch all the way down as it can take the life of the trans brake. Is that true? Thanks for your help.

Well now, how is it "almost impossible?" What is happening?

If it's lots of clash/grinding as we've all suspected, then the previous advice applies: You can't shift these tractors "on the fly." The transmission is NOT synchronized.

I had a customer that we sold a 3588 to . He insisted on shifting on the fly. He also was into after market products to improve different aspects of the tractor. He came across this spring loaded transmission brake offered by after market supplier and was after me to explain if it would allow him to better shift on the fly.

No amount of telling him it would not work or help seemed to impress him. Soooo, I got out the book and showed him the foldout of the power train. I explained and showed him that when the tracotor is moving that the pinion shaft in range transmission was always turning. If he was in either low or high range in range transmission, then the upper shaft in speed transmission was always turning when tractor was moving. Stopping the counter shaft to shift the gears on a spinning upper shaft would only make is shifting on the fly even much more difficult.

I don't know if I convinced him but I did my best. I said you just have to get good at picking the speed that closely matches top and bottom to shift while moving or be content to mash gears and wreck things. I did ride to the field one day with a young fellow who could shift their 856 through all four speed transmission gears with out scratching a one. One of a kind .
