Hello just want some opinions on weather to buy a 1086 or a 1066 with a cab . It will be for my 85 year old dad to use. It will be used for renovating , shredding and putting out round bales. Are these cabs adequate enough to keep a person cool in the Texas summers? What problems should I look for besides the normal wear and tare on an older tractor?
Thanks:

the 1086 is definitely a better cab. and yes you will want the a/c working. very good starting tractors. but pay attention to the TA and its shifting, and mcv valve adjustment. but the vet will be rolling in soon with advise . myself i dont think its the most ideal loader tractor with that shifter and trans gears. but when a person is 85 there is no hurry. lol. good field units.

I'd beware of someone with age getting out of 1086, the doors and steps are terrible to get out of. If it were my dad at 85, I would take him to try to get in and out of the ones your thinking about before you buy one.

I hate to say it,but howabout a 4430/4440 for your dad. Much easier to get in/out,and a cab that is second to none. The '86 is a decent cab,but hard to enter, especially for a'stoved up old man'.As was said'old mans steps' are going to be a must.A '66 with air and heat will be noisy, but otherwise acceptable.

1086 is much nicer, but really hard to get in and out of and I am 60.

I would look for JD with comfort cab.

Well heres my take on it , The 86 series cab and steps S uck , ya have a hard time seeing the draw bar while hooking up . Tripping over the shifters is a pain , more then likely the cab mounts are shot and depend on the year is how the clutch linkage is mounted and can and will affect clutch operation and shifting and Oh we will not go into the ride on the 86 your now setting where the dash use to be on a 66 and you now feel the bucking bronco affect when in the field as your being slapped around from the ft and the back . When you were setting over the rear end it was more a rocking horse ride . The 86's remind me of running and old CO 4070 I H cab over with a 14500 ft axle and a 46000 lb hendrickson rearend set up pulling a coal bucket over the old back cow paths , empty ya got your back beat to death and ya needed to load the wagon with a 45-50 tonner to smooth it out a little . For ease of getting in and out ya need the after market steps with hand rail and the extra little porch . US OLD guys don't get around like we think we should . I am 74 and not in to bad of shape and find them hard to get in and out of , Even our 1066 and 806 are becoming hard getting up and down on. Going to have to invest in the three step stair case with hand railing before spring comes . I will agree a Deere is easier for us OLD folks and a power shift would be the best trans set up and a WORKING SEAT BELT.

If you are looking for your dad those cabs suck on the 66 series for noise. Why not move up to one of the 7110 series tractors much better to get into and out of . Quiet cab power shift and easy controls quite similar to the Deere set up for controls of a 30,40,50,series tractor. Cab has a fair amount of room if he's a taller guy. decent seat in them too.

Unless he is a exceedingly spry 85, I say none of the above.

The only cabs on a 66 series I'd even think to recommend are a Hiniker or Year-A-Round. None of the factory cabs are particularly easy to get in and out of. At least the Hiniker and YAR cabs have more of a gradual stairstep entry and a shorter wider path to the seat. The factory deluxe cab you have to climb a basically vertical ladder and shimmy sideways down a hallway to get to the seat.

The 86 cab again is a pretty vertical climb unless you get the K&M steps, plus the door opens the wrong way and is vertical so you can't brace yourself on it to climb into the tractor. Opening the wrong way forces you toward the dirty tire. Then unless you have a later tractor the shifter is in the way. My 75 year old dad does not like getting into my 86 series cab.

The 86 series cab is much better for climate control. It's quieter and seals better. However if you want accessibility especially for older folks with possible limited mobility, I would recommend against it unless you get the K&M steps and door cylinder.

Are you really sure you want an 85 year old climbing up into any tractor that size?

There are a lot of stairs with any tractor.

I have seem lifts shown by members here.

Good grief. I'm 84 and yes it gets more difficult to get in any cab,red or green but unless he is is going to be climbing in and out a dozen times a day it's a non issue and both my knees are shot.

If the 86 is in decent shape it is a darn nice tractor.

I've had a 1086 for little over 20 years. As mentioned above they are difficult to get in/out of the cab especially for me and I'm only 40. They tend to be very light on the front end even with all the weights that can be put on the bracket. It's still a good tractor though. For someone's your dad's age I would suggest to get a CIH 7120 for ease of accessibility and use. They're pretty bullet proof. I can run one of our 71 series all day and not feel half as tired as a couple hrs in the 1086. I might would stay away from the 7110s unless I could confirm the differential has been updated to the 7120 series though.

Thanks for all yall's replies. But heck dad still can jump flat footed out of the back of a pick up truck bed . I hope I can do this when I am close his age. I know deere are nicer but always wanted a 86 or 66
series tractor. Never been around any just want some tips on buying a decent tractor. Heck I will probably be operating it 90% of the time. Found 1066 nice for its age but T/A is weak on low side. Will they go along time on T/A high only.

People seem to forget there are TWO doors on an 86 series
cab. No need to climb over shifters on "passenger" side.
79 and later units have better steps but aftermarket upgrades
would help.

By the time my wife's uncle retired from farming at the age of 90 he was using the right side door of his 986 exclusively. My 83 year old FIL still uses both doors of his 986 but widened the steps on the left side and added a handhold to both the door and fender.
