am converting from closed center system to an open center system, found out it was a lot cheaper to work on to eliminate the radial piston pump and go to a gear pump, anyone have any input on this matter

Are you saying it is cheaper to buy a completely different pump than to just repair the pump that is on there? As that series of tractor is designed to have the closed center pump that is there is a new pump going to just bolt up in place?

Have you checked out the entire closed center system to see what else will have to be completely replaced or rebuilt, i.e. each and every priority valve, check valve etc...

Also what about your implements, things like post setters are plumbed to run on either/or, not both. I learned that one the hard way by using a open center setup post setter on my closed center MF1105.

It just seems like you are going to go through a great deal of time and money to save a repair on the system that is designed to be there.

the main problem i had was that there was no way of eliminating which relief valve that was bad so i talked to a hydraulic repair tech and he told me i could convert it over just as easy and have a better and less expensive system to work with after conversion, the closed center system is great when all things work as they should but one relief valve can cause alot of headaches in trying to trouble shoot the system, if i convert to the open center there are a lot less complications. The priority valve and diverter valves are already open center I'm told. Hope so anyway, all i have left to do is plumb in the new pump and try the system out. Do you have any ideas what i might be looking at as far as problems might be. All my equipment so far are open centered anyway. Would appreciate any input on this matter.

All hyd functions are designed for a closed system.So when no functions are used no oil is moving. And when you remove the radial piston closed center pump the main releif goes with it . It is in the pump. So where is the open center pump going to pump oil to? There is a shock valve in the three point lift cover but I doubt the open center pump would last more than 10 minutes.

thanks I'll check with my manual to see where i can plumb in the relief valve I know that i'll have to change the valves for the three pt. lift and the aux. hyd. valves but i already have some to replace them with. Do you know of any other complications i might have?

The steering valve will more than likely have to be replaced with and open center valve and I'm not sure how the prioriy valve will function in this case.Perhaps you will have to use the power beyond port in the 3 spoll valve ,you are using to control your aux hyd and three point lift, to feed the steering valve. And I have no idea what to do with the brakes .If you get this all accomplished, I would like to here about it.

Sounds like the mechanic you are talking to is a JD or IH guy and don't know or don't want to get to know a Massey system. Try to find a good Massey mechanic and he will probably know the exact valve that is giving trouble. Push come to shove I'd pick up a Massey sevice manual on ebay and figure it out myself. Good Luck on the conversion and keep us informed on how it is going. I'm sure you can covert it but you are looking at a lot of work and expence. BTW; Grew up on a 1130 & 1155 with a closed system and all our other tractors had an open system and will take the close system hands down anytime.

You have the float option on the Aux. hyd valves. If you hook up hyd hose's a lot you will grow to hate the open center hyd. system.

I have a great deal of experience with the Massey closed center system. Anyone owning one of these great tractors needs to pay attention to the service manual and change the hydraulic system oil filter when manual suggests. If you skip changing the filter you will have problems with the pump in front and the one under the platform. If you think changing the closed center system to an open center will cure your problems, forget it, your problems have just began.

this is just my two cents, I've been a heavy equipment mech foe several years and I've also owned several of these 1000 series tractors and have worked on them my self. There is no way I would try to convert one of these systems to something else. these are decent systems that require a little premaintance. befor starting a PROJECT like this I would buy a salvage pump that was checked out. you might just damage something that will cost you more money and time. I would park it till I could fix it. I once had one of my 1135 tore down for a year waiting on funds to make repair. my two cents
