1170 REFURBISH UPDATE

During January thru March, I got distracted from fixing minor things on my 1170. Starting back in Nov, I managed to split the tractor and to stop the transmission oil from weeping into the clutch.

In Dec, because the front-back adjustment slides on the operator seat were gummed up, I rigged my cherry picker (including a heavy counterweight for safety) to remove and reinstall the entire seat. A new seat cushion and both new arm rest pads were also installed

This month so far, I have replaced all seven of the 45 year old miniature light bulbs that illuminate the dash gauges.

I am now ready to replace two sending units. It appears straight forward to replace the fuel gauge sending unit without removing the fuel tank. I am glad the fuel tank could stay in place. I managed to drain the tank.

Maybe there is a lot of crud around the transmission oil temperature sending unit and also because I am too old/lazy/fat LOL to crawl around under the tractor and scrap crud in my face, I am unable to see where the transmission oil temperature sending unit is located. ANY INFORMATION AS TO EXACTLY WHERE THIS SENDING UNIT IS LOCATED WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Ron, that sender is low in the rear PTO casting, there is a wire that runs down the back pto housing, if you follow that u will find it.

Thanks mEI. A little digging with a screwdriver from the back and there it is. Looks like ample space for a wrench and for both hands to work and to swap it out quickly and only loose a dab of oil.

I remember seeing the sender years ago but I could not remember where it was. I do not remember the gauge ever working since I bought the tractor used about 40 years ago. With an 8 speed manual trans, not having wet brakes, and the final drives not monitored for temp, I figured it was not very important to have this gauge working.

About 20 years ago, I got the urge to fix the gauge so I ordered the new sender. The urge soon disappeared before I got around to installing it so the new sender has been in a drawer for the past 20 years. Now I want things working okay for the next owner because, at my age, I have to sell it soon in order for me to still be able to find it a good home--- another barn to keep it dry. LOL

I have another problem---removing the old fuel gauge sender.

Removing the 6 screws is easy to get at and plenty of space to move the sender downward. But I can't get the electrical mechanism (the bulge) to pass thru the opening in the tank. Its hard to tell but looks like the opening might be slightly oval or maybe have a shallow slot.

I can hear the wire lever and float rubbing on the bottom of the tank, and bumping the walls, when I twist the old sender back and forth. But this allow me to only rotating it a little over 90 degrees. ARE THERE ANY TRICKS TO REMOVING THE OLD SENDER?

The bulge on the new sender looks small enough to hopefully easily pass thru the hole in the tank

You ARE going to at least use a napkin to clean that area before you crack-open that sending unit :-( ???

Good question to ask a rookie. Back around 1949 when I was 10 years old, my dad was a good mechanic and at the time he was training me to keep crud from falling into oil cavities, bolt holes, etc.

In the picture with the wrench, I was just checking to see if my 12 point box-end wrench would slip onto on the hex and to see how much space would be left to index the wrench when I finally get around to swapping out the sender. Swapping out the sender is still in the near future but other farm related projects are more pressing at the moment. YES, I plan to wipe away the remaining crud around the threads. LOL

You are doing all the tough jobs...Youre lucky - your dash comes out further than I have ever got a 70 series dash pulled out. I only seem to get about an inch....

Those seats are painful. I admire your picker! Nice job. I have taken them out the door and back window but that was back when I was a younger and stronger man. I may have to copy your design as I need some seat work done too.

Ive done the fuel sender as well but didnt have trouble with the bulb. but again it was long ago.

Youre making a nice tractor. Keep me in mind if you sell it.
