1175 steering hard

Looking to buy an 1175. It has a hard spot in the steering. It improved at higher rpm Hydraulics seem to work ok, only way I had to test is front mounted blade, brakes need bled but worked when pumped couple times. What should I look for to fix steering?
Thanks

I would do a hydraulic pressure test at the flow divider valve . 180 to 200 lb. All you need is a 300lb gauge (the one with the liquid in it .) and 1/4 to 1/8 npt reducer to test . So for under 20 bucks you could rule out a hydraulic pump problem. Then I would be looking maybe at a steering problem or failure . Cylinder or tie rod binding. Hope this helps .

The steering and brake system is entirely separate from the main hydraulic system and RPS supply, the small line out of the pump is the supply from the 8 GPM steering and brake pump, it is entirely possible to have 8 GPM pump failure but have good hydraulic flow on the main system. On a power brake tractor , steering and brake pressure is controlled in the power brake valve, in a standard brake model there is a relief that is in the circuitry on the lines just ahead of the firewall. For a steering or brake problem you need to concentrate on the 8 GPM side, the 8 GPM circuit does go into the power shift valve to set up lube pressure regulation for the power shift. The proper way to determine pump condition (effeciency %) is with a flow meter. There are things that can give a trained guy with experience an idea but we still like to test to isolate. Forget the flow divider it is not even in the same circuit.

great description mEl,, I had already suggested on fb he needed to flow test the steering/brake side of the pump,, must have thought there was a better way lol I have been wanting to ask you and or others,, have you found that the cold oil relief the power brake unitto be causing hard steering? I have seen it a few times here just wondering as I have never seen anyone bring it up before,, normally this condition causes harder steering when cold but you still have great brake power, I have seen this on the pre-external adjusting relief units

CNT, I have been removed from these units a number of years now and am relying on experiences from years past, not being in a great ag area does not help either.

I have never seen a lot of steering problems but had a couple that the snap ring popped out of the I believe boost spool in the brake valve that caused issues.

I do not watch the FB site often and had no idea you had already touched on it, It frustrates me a bit when information given just takes you down a bunny trail and does not apply to the problem at hand. If it has just a hard spot it may well be a mechanical issue rather than a hydraulic problem but the fact that it works better at higher throttle would indicate worn pump but he did not say if it got worse with warm oil, that info would be helpful also

mEl, No worries at all I was mainly just glad we were on the same page on the diagnosis, I cant really blame a guy for trying to find a easier answer than doing a flow test, not many have one hanging up in their shop like I do lol

Yes, if I were actively doing this for a living yet I would miss that a lot, But the relationship I have with my dealership that I served my entire career would allow me to use theirs I am sure. I have been gone for better than 4 years and still have the key LOL. When I left they told me I could leave my tools set till I wanted to move them which I did and kept my key so I had access to my tools, I moved my tools and they never asked me for them. A while back now the president asked me to do something for them and asked if I needed a key, I said no I still have mine and he just smiled.

I didn?t mean to doubt your expertise on fb page, just hard to try and diagnose a tractor that you don?t own yet. Especially 4 hours away from home and without proper tools,or, for that matter, experience. Your response on fb definitely helped me, as now I?m going to have to renegotiate price with the knowledge it?s probably bad pump. Was just looking for all possible causes. Couple other people suggested couple other possibilities, all probably based on personal experience, figured I?d negotiate based on worst one. I?m pretty sure your most likely correct, especially after responses that were added on here.
Again, sure didn?t mean to offend, I?ll be relying on everyone?s great advice on all the forums, fb and yt when I finally drag one home. Hopefully it?s this one.
Thanks!
