1190 International mower conditioner

Looking at an IH 1190 mower conditioner how does it
compare to a NH 489 or 492 in reliability and cutting
quality? Doing about 40 acres heavy grass mix hay.

The neighbor had one that he bought new. He did alright. I don't the parts situation on those but would imagine most NH parts are easier to get.

That isn't a model built by Hesston is it? If it is, I'd take it over a New Holland any day of the week. If not, I don't have a recommendation on it.

No, it's built by New Idea.

We had one years ago and wore it slap out. Initially we had trouble with plugging up the knife guards, but they eventually got the right type of guards in it for our crops.

Wore slap out is the main the problem you're going to run into. The newest one is 35-ish years old. I think 1986 is the last year for the New Idea built CaseIH mowers. Then they switched to Hesston.

I don't know if you can get parts aside from knives and guards, chains and belts. If any of the major parts need replacing you may be out of luck unless you can find a parts machine.

I would like to comment on the parts availability for an old New Idea Haybine. I have a New Idea Model 290 which is probably two models older than the one you are looking at. When I try to buy parts I find that most things are no longer available, even though the parts are still listed on different websites. When you place your order for a part is when you find out that the part is no longer available. The model 290 also was marketed by Ford and Massey Ferguson so that does help a bit when you are looking for used parts. I would not feel comfortable trying to cut 40 acres a year with the one I have, I am working on it a lot now and I only cut 8 acres.

The 290 has nothing in common with an 1190 in terms of design. The 1190 was an IH designed machine built at IH's Hamilton, Ontario plant. IH got into financial difficulty around the same time and one of the remedies was to sell the hay and forage line to New Idea during the early 1980's. The bottom line is the earlier New Idea designed products had little market presence so it did not pay to provide parts beyond what state and federal laws required for time duration. An 1190 in good condition should be reliable to cut a fair amount of acreage. Please note what I said good condition versus being saved from the scrap man. There should be good ones around whether or not they are for sale just like any model of farm equipment. They were also made for Ford for a short time. Things such as knives and guards should not be a problem. If a conditioning roll is shot then best to pass on the machine.

The New Idea factory has been closed for quessing going on 20 tears now and all parts design paper work went in the dumpster. Friend was assigned the job of putting it in the dumpsteer. Every thing else went to junk pile. No parts were made from one year before New Idea had their 100 year aniversery and it was the year after that every thing was didposed of. If I would did out my plack for being an exibitor at the 100 year party I could tell the exact year.. 2 Friends worked in design at time they went out of bussness.

Kind of sad as to what happened with NI but they had run their course. The market for their stock and trade such as corn pickers, box spreaders, and slat chain and paddle elevators fell off tremendously after 1980. Buying the hay and forage line from IH did not give them much of a reprieve as those products soon faced steep decline in terms of demand. I remember when I was a kid that NI was an important line for the dealers who carried them. Good parts business during the fall and winter.

Yea it is sad. We bought a new 2 row NI corn picker and new 40 hay and grain elevator also NI. We filled many corn cribs. Brother picked and I unloaded gravity wagons. God I was in good shape then. Late60s early 70s thru late 70s..neighbor had a JD 4520 with rice and cane tires when it got wet.

Just found the date for New Idea 100th, It was 1999 so factory closed in 1998, so 24 years since any New Idea machinery was built. I had 2 pieces on display and they come to my farm to pick them up to display and then brought them back. A lot of what I expeded them to have in display they did not have.

I had a 488 nh. I'd stay away from it, mine had wobble box issues. Pretty common on the 489. Needless to say it is no longer on the farm.
