12 volt coil for 8N--resistor?

Early 8N (front distrib.) with 12 volt system: the coil is shot--got overheated. If I get a new 12 volt coil (over the distributor type) is a resistor necessary? If so, what bad happens if I don't use a resistor?

even the 2.5 ohm 12v square coils still need the oem ballast resistor.

if you choose not to use it.. plan on replacing coils and points sooner than needed.
