12 volt conversion

i have decided to go 12 volt on the 52 8n and i need help i need to know all the parts i need to buy i don't want to do this half
a** i want it done right im pretty fussy about what i put in to the old girl is there instructions on how to do this

buy a kit. it should come with everything u need (except 12 volt headlights) - alternator, alternator brackets, new belt, wiring harness, and ballast resistor - along with instructions.

if u have any questions along the way, plenty of folk here will have answers for u.

it's a very simple job. i converted my 2N soon after i got it, and am very happy with the conversion.

afterthought - iirc, a 52 won't need an extra ballast resistor. if i'm wrong about that, i suspect someone will correct me ;)

Y-T sells a kit but I will never use one since it is cheaper to buy local. I use a Delco alternator like what would be on a 1980 Chev pick up. You can also buy a true 12 volt coil or add a ballast resister like the O'Reilly's one which is a VR-1 or 2. Then just wire it up which is a simple 3 wire set up. The 2 wire plug is marked #1 and #2. The number 2 wire goes to the charge stud on the alternator and the #1 wire to the ignition switch with a diode or light bulb in line and the wire from the charge stud to the amp gauge the non-ignition side but you also have to switch wires or the gauge you read backwards since 6 volt is + ground and an alternator needs a - ground

All tractor that where 6 volts need a ballast resister when switched to 12 volts or a true 12 volt coil other wise the point do not last long and the coil may also not last long

I just did a 52 a few months with a kit from YT. Every thing needed is in the kit. No mess no fuss worth a few extra dollars. The i wire alternator is working great.

I agree with R Geiger. The YT kit works well and is easy to install. IF you have done 12 volts conversions before then go with OLD's advice. Lots of posts on YT from people trying to 'roll their own' and have troubles.

side mount coil is a 52

depends on what the kit comes with as to if a resistor is needed.

if it has a true 12v coil, no resistor.. if no new coil, then a resistor and the old 6v coil.

The YT kit I used had a resistor to use with a 6 volt coil. The only thing I had to do was ream a couple of holes in the mount bracket.

Can anyone tell me, if it makes a difference using a 12V car battery or a 12V deep cycle battery?

I have an extra deep cycle, that's why I ask.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

It will work and you will probably not notice a difference .

Read this wiki article .

i wouldn't buy a deep cycle battery for this - but if i had one laying around, i wouldn't hesitate to use it.
