12 volt Pacer

I have a MH Pacer that has been converted to 12 volts , the coil on it is 12v and says external resistor required . I don see any resistor on it. Is the part #140520 on YT what I need to supply power to the 6v distributor , Thanks

The distributor isn't 6-volt if the tractor is converted to 12-volts. The points are a switch, not tied to 6 or 12 volts. While it may not be prefect, the condenser will work on either. The issue is the internal wiring of the coil and the current it allows to pass to the points. A 12 volt system will push more current through a 6-volt coil than it was designed for. A coil marked "12-volt external resistor required" is basically a 6-volt, that is why it needs a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and the coil, or point life will generally be shortened by having to handle current in excess of what they were designed for.

Have you run it with the coil you have? You can go to your local auto parts store and get a ballast resistor and wire it in series ahead of the coil you have, if the coil is still working. An example is NAPA BK S43243. Your coil with a ballast resistor will meet your need. If I waned to change the coil I would go with a 12-volt no external resistor required, not the one you mention that has a resistor piggyback on it, my personal choice, either will work.

Thanks Jim.ME I really respect your input on all things tractor related on the forum . The tractor runs as is but the coil gets very hot . I will get the resister you mentioned and install .

The required resister is available at any automotive store. They were originally used on a 57 Chevrolet with a V8. I have one on a Farmall 400. Your points will last longer, and your coil will stay cooler. That Pacer must spin over pretty fast when starting.
