12 volt pumps

Does anyone have any luck with 12 volt pumps like they sell at Fleet Farm or Tractor Supply? No matter how we put them away they only last a year or two. Wanted to use the sprayer today and as is often the case it wouldn't work. I expect more from a pump that costs $100 or more.

I run a dose of that pump saver through mine after I clean it out.
Then plug the ends.

Never had a problem here. Have 2 different ones. One is close to 10 years old. Just clean and drain each fall. It is on a 25 gallon tank. Probably run close to 250 gal a year thru it. Have a cheep 15 gal on back of super a i use spraying bug / grass killer when cultivating. Dont use it much but it is several years old . .

Like paint brushes, what one man calls clean another considers filthy. That and need for storage lubricant. All of that and we haven't even talked about how pump is operated when used. Insufficient/no by-pass is hard on a pump. Loose/leaky intake resulting in cavitation doesn't do pump any good.

While pump is in normal operation, check voltage at or near motor. If there's any drop from volts at battery the wires need to be larger.

The only one I have is on a 15-gallon spot sprayer, it's 18 years old. I've always flushed it with plenty of fresh water after use. It has a pressure switch of some type so that it doesn't need a bypass. Can't recall the brand, but the whole set-up was under $100.00 when new.

I have a 35 gallon 12V sprayer that I haul around with the RTV. Came from RK 5-6 years ago and about $100. I run a dozen tank fills a year through it spraying weeds. ALL I've even done is flush it out with clean water in the fall and make sure it's drained.

Years ago when I did spraying I flushed with lots of water then filled the pump with straight anti freeze for storage. Never had a problem .

You have to clean it completely aned lube it.

I drain my 25 gallon tank sprayer in the winter. I modified the pump intake as shown in the picture. I may have to use a garden hose to push water to prime my pump

As others have said, you need to clean them and keep them from freezing. I take mine pump off and put it in a heated building for the winter.
