12 volt to30

I have a Delco alternator with internal regulator on my TO 30. I replaced the fan belt [worn out] now the alternator puts out 14-15 volts at operating speed 1200 t0 1300 RPM. Should I install a resister in front of the coil [true 12volt] to keep it a little cooler ? Thanks for any thoughts. Tim

Just how accurate is your meter. The alternator should put out between 13.6 and 14.2 at full speed. If it is above 14.2 you may need a new regulator in the alternator.

As long as the voltage is between the two numbers I mentioned your coil should be fine as that is what it is designed for.

Hi Tim,

Putting a resistor inline in front of the coil will reduce the input voltage to the coil and it will not work properly. You may want to replace that coil if its
getting too hot.

If you have a 12V coil ( it will have ~3.2 ohms resistance) then no extra resistor is necessary. If
you have a 6V coil (~1.6 ohms resistance) then you'll need a resistor. The ignition system is
design to run at about 4 amps +/- so if your coil resistance is two low, the points will burn and
your coil will overheat.

[Thanks All, I will check the accuracy of my in-dash volt meter. quote="jtr-ind"](reply to post at 17:21:54 09/12/21) [/quote]
