1206 starter

I have a question on a starter on
a 1206 . the starter starts to
engage but after a turn of the
engine or so it spins or free
wheels. Seems as through the
electric part works fine . is the
gear drive the problem that I
could just replace that and see if
that fixes the problem before I
have the whole starter gone thru.
Thoughts from everyone?

The clutch is a one-way clutch. Only drives the direction the gear is turning to start the engine. Once the engine starts and the flywheel is spinning the starter drive pinion gear faster than the armature shaft is turning the pinion gear just free-wheels. If an armature is run over speed high enough the windings will come apart. The one way clutch prevents this.

The starter drive is bad, it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately the starrer has to be taken completely apart to replace the drive. Good time to check the bushings and brushes and do a good cleaning and relube the bushings.
