Looking at a 1210 David Brown owner says its really a 1212. It has a loader, which seems in good condition, tractor has been repainted somewhere along the line. Owner says it runs rough, will try and start it tomorrow night. Any thing to watch out for? How were these overall?

Check the identification plate to confirm if its a 1210 or 1212 SID plate will be located on the clutch housing on he left side of the tractor. If it does have the power shift transmission make sure it shifts up and down easily through all 4 ranges.

(quoted from post at 21:44:45 08/17/15) Check the identification plate to confirm if its a 1210 or 1212 SID plate will be located on the clutch housing on he left side of the tractor. If it does have the power shift transmission make sure it shifts up and down easily through all 4 ranges.

And don't expect it to shift like a Case powershift. The DB unit is soft and slow in comparison. It sticks in my head that the factory spec is 1 second to make a shift at 1800 rpms.

Engine is a 3 main bearing, bore in block, naturally aspirated, direct injected, with an inline pump(most are Simms/Minemec, a few have Bosch). They used the same basic engine right through 1987 in the 1294/1394.

Good engines, super fuel efficient, long lived(my daily driver has 12000+ hours on the original valves and rings but had one crankshaft in that period)but crankshaft breakages happen if you lug them hard at low RPMs(I am convinced it is a harmonics issue). Crank breakages are almost guaranteed if the grinder doesn't keep the original radius when turning it. Tesla was convinced you could tear apart the world if you found the right frequency. I think Brown found it just north of 1400 rpms under a heavy load.

Don't use ether on them. You will brake rings and pistons(4 ring piston with close spacing).
