1240 planter markers

Are there any tricks or adjustments a person should look at if you're having problems with inconsistent marker droppings. It seems to want to shift over and always drop the right marker no matter how you turn. If you're REALLLY careful and do not do a tear-drop type turn it seems to work (sometimes). Can you just ofset the tension on the drawbar spring-holder? Are there common parts that wear and should be replaced?

Thanks for any help

Tom, I am assuming you don't have an operator's manual for your planter because this adjustment is covered in the book. It is really pretty simple. Pull on one of the marker chains to slide the catch to that side. After this is done, hook the opposite chain to the spring on the bracket on your drawbar. Loop the chain around the hook on the spring and use a small hook to connect this chain to itself. Once this is done, do the same thing to the other side without disturbing your previous adjustment. Once this is done the markers should work every time. Hope this helps. Mike

The shift 'dog' or 'latch' can get worn and not hold good enough,,my dad useto blame our old 1240 markers for his spring drinking problem,,he would get all yanked out of shape over them.....

My uncle had a spring drinking problem too, even when his markers were working he couldn't make a straight row!! He used to say you get more corn in a curvey row.

Thanks guys.

That marker setup is the same as on the 494 - 494A series and the latch at center rear of planter will get wore and will catch so hard on one side that it cannot let go to let the markers shift from side to side. Sometimes just putting in a few shim washers will help or just even replacing the 1/4" pin that holds the latch will help, even a good cleaning. The arm that mounts on the drawbar of the tractors has to be the exact distance forward of the hitch pin to work (Some tractors this is not in correct place) and have the proper tension on each chain and you need the book to get this all set corectly and look at the pictures in the book to do it.
