12v coil.....

Bought a 640 Ford tractor witha 12v conversion. So the question is: going over things an I noticed a 12v electronic ignition coil, tractor is non electronic ignition meaning points, conderser, resister an so on. Is this type of coil a future prob for the standard 12v conversion? Will chg out if the standard coil is needed. Thanks for any and all advice!

12V coil should be marked "for use with external resistor" or
similar if one is needed. A true 12V coil will not need a resistor.
If uncertain, I would squander the $15 for a true 12V coil and
eliminate the resistor and its added connections.
NAPA IC14SB or equivalent.

Thx Royse appreciate the info. The electronic ignition coil (with an external resister) has been in this tractor for about 2 yrs an hasn’t caused any probs or that’s what the guy told me. I’ve only had the tractor for 2 days an I’ve been going thru it changing out some of these makeshift (that’s how I spotted the coil) repairs.....it’s amazing how some people cheap out on correct parts to save a dollar or two....I say fix it rite the first time an be done with it.

What do you mean by an "electronic ignition coil"? If it is a Pertronix "Flame Thrower" it will work. They come in a 1.5 ohm resistance primary (6 volt or 12 volt with additional 1.5 ohm resistor) or 3 ohm primary for direct 12 volt with no external resistor.

They will work with points ignition (it has for 2 years)

As Royce says, it you want to simplify and eliminate the resistor you can get a NAPA IC14SB or equivalent
