12V Conversion, '64 2000. Starter relay question.

I have a "64 2000 SOS 4 cyl gas that I bought about a year ago. It has a 12V Delco 10 SI 3 wire conversion that was done in a very sloppy manner. Many cut off wires, SOS safety switch not connected, etc. I"ve found the wiring diagrams and the Hundred Series 12V conversion that john in la has done (thanks much john!!), and am basically looking at the 601/801 3 wire 12 V diagram when I can get mine in the shop to do a total re-wire. Finally -- to my question.

I want to use the 4 post starter relay. John"s description was to use a 4 post from a 801 diesel. I"ve looked up the part number, and what I came up with was #311006. I bought a Sparex S61049 (equiv. to 311006)from one of the on-line Ford tractor parts places. HOWEVER, in checking it out, I did not find what I was expecting. I thought the solinoid coil would be isolated from the ground (mounting tab), but it is not. I get a resistance across the coil (i to S)of 3.2 ohms. I get 0.6 ohms from i to ground, and 4.0 ohms from S to ground. This can"t be right, can it? Or am I not seeing this right? Thanks for your help, guys! Dick

just check it.. if you hook up jump cable from bat ground to solenoid base, and jump power to the switch terminal and it engages... it ain't isolated.

IMHO.. I'm guessing yours aint.. I'd like to see megaohms of resistance between an iso base and al the other connectors..e tc.

Thanks for your reply, soundguy. I did go ahead & bench test it. On first try, it would engage with the base grounded & 12V+ to either S or i. I then grounded the i term & applied 12V to S (as it should operate) & it engaged. I then went back to the original hook-up & it wouldn't engage!! So after several tries it would sometimes engage with the base grounded & sometimes not. My conclusion is that it is indeed the correct relay, but something is inside "floating around" & shorting out to ground.

I'm thinking this is another example of poor Mfg/QA of the current supply of new parts!! I guess I'll get another one & see if I can find a good one. Thanks! Dick

It sure sounds like your relay is not right; broken; some China junk; no matter what one you got.

On the correct relay (part# 311006) if you put power to the I post with the base grounded it should not engage the relay BUT you should see power at the S post because the S and I post are hooked together internally.

If you had ordered OR they sent you the wrong relay hooking power to the I post with the base grounded still should not engage the relay. The I post in this relay is hooked only to the starter wire (big) post.

From your description it sounds like the wire that connects the S and I post if flopping around in the case and touching the metal base periodically.

Send it back and try another. If you still have problems or decide you want to buy it local so you are dealing with a live person in case anything goes wrong let me know and I will give you a list of relays (part #'s) that will work.

I've ordered another relay from a different source. We'll hope it is a better example. If you have time, I would appreciate having at least a couple part#s that are equivalent to the 311006. If you have a NAPA number, that would be wonderful. Thanks! Dick
