12Volt conversion Kits

Have a 53 Super H & time for a new battery, so thinking of maybe going 12 volt as the 6 volt doesn't seem to last that long, now charging system works fine, but the tractor doesn't get used a lot, so may that have more to do with it also ? Just wondering which kits seem to be the best ? Thanks, Alan

After a false start with an off-brand unit, I went with a Pertronix from this site along with a Delco 10si alternator on my Super H. It can sit for months and start within a revolution of the flywheel with no choke.

JC welcome to YT! You have to have won some sort of a prize by making your first post here a reply rather than a
question! To the OP I cannot help you on what is the best kit. Personally I would just piece together what I need. I have
not done an H but I have heard the Delco 10si is a tight fit under the hood.

Do a google search for Charlie's Repair, I have 4 of his kits. Farmall H, McCormick Super W6, Farmall 400 & IH W450. Has great wiring diagrams on his website also. Uses a nice compact alternator.

One "kit" I can NOT recommend is the one from Jensales. Dad bought their "kit" and what he got in the mail was a Delco 10SI one-wire alternator. NOTHING else. No bracket. No wiring. No instructions.

Turns out on an M size tractor you don't need a bracket. All you do is flip over the factory generator mount on the engine block, trim a little off the lower mounting lug of the alternator, and use a piece of 3/8" all thread to hang the alternator on the factory bracket. Uses the factory top brace, the factory belt. Tucks up under the hood perfectly.

Not sure if the same thing will work on an H.

(quoted from post at 17:40:16 08/24/21) It won't. too tight! Hitachi 14231 will fit and wire up like a Delco L= excite diode/lamp, S= sense goes to the output stud (5 inches. Jim

We couldn't get a 14231 to fit with the factory bracket on my Super H, although we did not know the flip-the-bracket-over trick.

We had to manufacture "extension blocks" to bring the bottom of the alternator out enough that it could "lean" over and sit below the hood. Just bolted directly to the factory bracket in the factory position, it sticks straight up and above the hood by about an inch.

The Delco 10si will NOT fit under the hood of an H. An M, yes, but an H, NO.

For an H, you need an alternator from a Toyota, or something like that. Hitachi brand I think.
