130 Vibes

Got my 130 back up running today and took 'er out for spin.
I notice an amount of vibration felt in the seat while in 4th road gear. Does not seem normal to me.
What could be wrong?

The transmission was taken apart to install an oiler gear, new seals, and bearings. Also both finals were off for rebuild as well. Brakes work nice and smooth.

All have been filled with 80W gear oil.

If you have had it running in 4th before, and it is different now, what changed. If not it is probably the way the tire treads hit pavement. Jim

The tires on my 44 need to be run a while after sitting, then smooth out.

No, not the tires. I was running on soft wet snow. Seems like a grinding high frequency, not felt in lower gears. Maybe something is out of alignment slightly.

Backlash or meshing of conical gears not adjusted properly?

Sounds like a possibility.
Is there a fix that does not involve removing the transmission?

if the differential was removed, the the backlash had to be checked before teardown so that the crown and pinion is meshing in the original spot. all shims must be put back in original place. diff's not set up properly cause a whin not a vibration.

There is some whine, but not so bad as to be a concern. The vibes have me wondering though.
I should have paid more attention to the backlash info. I do not remember marking any positions etc.. before removal. Here's pic of the stuff on the table, including the broken oiler gear. I just put everything back as it came out, did not run into any problems that I remember.

Now I am getting a faint recollection of using a paint pen to mark a couple dots to get the mesh correct. This was back in Feb. 2009 when I tore that down. Should have took a few pics of that. I did not need the tractor so I have just been working on it as a project over the years. It is only just running again in the last month.

you need a dial indicator and some yellow gear paste to get the gear pattern and backlash. a manual would show you this info. was just thinking, if you have zero backlash that would probably cause a vibration.

Thanks. I will study some material on checking/setting backlash.
Does this mean that the finals will likely have to come off again?
