134ci engine rebuild

my naa was 25 lbs lower on two center cylinders.(75lbs). pulled the head and found leaky valves. the tractor carries 50lbs oil pressure at all times, and doesnt burn one drop of oil. the mechanic doing the valve job is very good at what he does trust him 100%. he suggests new sleeves, pistons and rings. as far as i can tell the sleeves and pistons look fine. he is worried about higher compression (due to the valve job) on the old rings. i wasnt prepared to this kind of overhaul. thoughts and suggestions welcome

He should be selling insurance!

Do the valve job and put it back together.

Where you erred was doing a compression check to begin with if it was working good.

the tractor would not start in the cold weather. i had to prime the cylinders with gas for it to fire. thats why i checked the compression.

The mechanic is correct technically. However technical won't always cut the ground or mow the hay any better. Just maybe longer and more economically. Put it back together the cheaper way and maybe run twenty more years or maybe not, then wish you had spent a little more. If you know the tractor history and has been running anti=cavitation fluid, go for it. That's the only real thing to get excited about right now /IMHO

Could always re ring it. I was gonna do my ford but I didnt feel like it. It runs just fine.

I doubt ur cranking pressures all that bad. I milled .080" off my head for more compression.

Compression was not why it wouldn't start cold. Probably carburetor trouble.

Check to see if the flap spring on the choke is still in place.

It's better to use starting fluid sprayed into the intake to start in cold than to pull the plugs to start.

If you have trouble with starting a 600- 800 or 2000- 4000 gas engine , try jumping across the ignition switch. They are notorius for going bad. They will show 6 volts going across them , but not enough amperage to fire the coil. Just replaced the switch on my 640 this winter again and it starts like new now.
