135 diesel stopped running

1965 Massey 135. Did about 2 hours worth of mowing at 1750 rpm. Tractor ran fine, headed to shade
tree to let engine cool down. Put throttle to idle, tractor shut off. Tried to get it start no go. Changed fuel
filters , made sure gaskets were in housing grooves. Still no run. Tried pulling to start acted like it was
trying to run one cylinder, black smoke. Need help! Thanks!

Is there white smoke when you try to start it with the starter?

Is there fuel coming out when you crack the lines at the injectors and turn it over with the starter?

Is there lots of fuel coming out of the injection pump bleed screws when you manually work the lift pump?

id not try cracking lines at injectors. For some reason I suspect the lift pump. Noticed when try to bleed air bubbles showing up in sediment bowl. Don t know if that s normal. Bleed screws at the pump we got air then stream. If lift pump quit working while mowing would injection pump get enough fuel to keep running? Didn t pay attention to exhaust when trying to start. I also believe lift pump is aftermarket.

There should NOT be bubbles in the sediment bowl. I would do a little more investigating / experimenting before I condemned the lift pump.

The fuel tank is above everything else so if there is a leak allowing air into the system then when the tractor is not running one would expect fuel to come out of the leak. Any signs of a fuel leak?

Have to be wary of above though, sometimes leaks in lines (especially rubber lines) can act like check valves, allow air in but not fuel out. And vice versa.

It is possible but often the other way around. When lift pump is failing (or a fuel line or filter restriction, etc.) IP will draw enough fuel at idle, but lose power when worked harder.

I ll have to do more checking. Tractor is 200 miles away. Have owned it for 4 years. Only battery problems, always starts right up. I feel it is something simple I hope. Guess I have to get the old TO-20 back out. Thanks for the reply. I ll be back.
