135 Timing Cover

I am in the process of rebuilding my Massey 135 with Perkins gas.
It was going good until I attempted to install the timing cover.
The cover will not set in place. It hangs up at the bottom of the timing cover.
If I take the oil slinger out it will fit, so obviously this is part of the problem but I dont understand why.
The crank gear is "home" and will not move back any further.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Has gear been replaced or is it the original, gear in picture looks wide. Is crank original or replacement, not sure what has changed if thrust washers are locating crank correctly, if any parts have been changed maybe something is not machined as it should be.

Hi,
From the photo the crank as a whole does not appear to be sitting too far forward in the front main bearing. To further check this, does the idler gear on the oil pump have full engagement with the crank gear? If the crank gear was too far forward it may show at the point of mesh.
Does the crank sprocket appear to be against its locating shoulder on the shaft? If not, either fit the pulley and cautiously tighten the bolt or try tapping the sprocket back with a brass drift.
Not done one for a while but seem to recall that the flat face of the slinger goes to the sprocket. Do you have marks on the slinger from the sprocket? Do you have the old crank to compare the size of the gear and length of the shaft.
Is there any possibility that the front pair of thrust washers were left out and the crank is now sitting further forward than it should?
Let us know what you find.
