1370 axle gears

Started tearing into 1370 and found that the axle shaft/sun gear on the left side is stripped out where it goes into the pinion gears of the axle, damaged the ring gear and ring gear retainer, pinion gears and I can see that the retaining bolt has the head rounded off and the retaining plate was loose just bouncing around in there. The right side has slight damage starting on the same shaft but it doesnt look like any damage to the pinion gears or the ring gear. The ring gear retainer on right has a couple of damaged teeth. I can see that the parking brake band is coming apart so I'm going to take diff out and I want to inspect it any way. The fluid was dark with some shine to it but the big pieces seemed to stay where they fell into bottom of the trans case. Theres a cone shaped screen I can see if I look towards the front past the diff. I was wondering if I can pull it out the back and clean it. Also not sure how to get the retaining bolt out since head is round maybe torch or maybe I can find a complete axle at wrecking yard. Is that axle shaft stripping a common problem or did something cause this?

The teeth breaking off the sun gear is a all to common of a failure. Most 13's have been updated to gears similar in size to the ones used in 1570. However after enough
hrs and work those to can fail. A failure such as yours can also break the trans and axle housings if a large enough tooth breaks off and gets between a plant. gear and
the ring gears. You could torch that bolt head off if a socket will no longer remove it. The tractor has to be split to remove the screen. Teardown the diff. assembly
after it is removed to inspect those internal gears and washers. There could very well be more troubles located in the unit with all those pieces of metal floating
around. Rod.

I have a transmission, rear end and axles off a 1370 I saved from going to a scrapper. It is partially disassembled and the sun gears and planetaries are good. Email me if you are interested.
