1370 Modifications

Awhile ago I posted pics of the 1370 which we own. Several guys noted a few items on the tractor not normally seen and requested a better view and explanation as to why this was done. Those items were engine intake and cooling air, single side mounted battery and extended front axle. I will explain the air system tonite. Here in SW MN we encountered terrible problems with 13's sucking corn leaves in the radiator area and up into the air induction system. Attempts at sealing the hood never solved the problem. Case had a good idea on the 15's by running all engine combustion air through a hood mounted prescreen, this eliminated corn leaves in the air induction. That idea was simply retrofitted to the 13's by putting a 6 in. rubber elbow on the front of the air induction, cutting a hole in the hood and installed the 15 prescreen in the elbow. Problem solved, I would guess this was installed on over 90% of the 13's in this area. A idea that lessened the problem of leaves and chaff in the radiator was to install a 15 upper grillin the 13's and taking the orriginal flat 13 grill and install it on the top of the hood helped alot. This gave the cooling air more surface area to enter and greatly reduced the amount of chaff and leaves getting pulled in. We did not do this to alot of tractors, but it's benefits were well worth the expense if cooling was a problem. Rod.

Great looking tractor and love the modifications, any thing to keep the great 504 alive!! Aways wondered what the dimple in the bottom of the nose piece was for, maybe for the crank to go in!?! As if you could crank a 504.

Thats a darn good question, I've wondered for years why in the world did they put that notch down there. It serves no useful function that I know of. Hopefully someone will read this that knows the reason. Rod.

We bought a 1270 outta IL with the air intake through the hood. I'd never seen one like that and it seems you can hear the turbo whine a lot more.

Forgot to add that 1270's with the air induction system could have the same kit installed and alot did. As for the turbo whine the kit would have no bearing on that. That whine varied from tractor to tractor or should I say turbo to turbo and I have no idea why this occurs. Rod.

Rod,
Thanks for the post about all the mods, Here in CNY we didn't have the heavy airborn debrs. We didn't run for hours on end, and when the tractor was shut down, most of the leaves etc. fell off the front grill due to it's forward slopimg deign. We ordered all our 13's with the long wheelbase when it became available. They would "Power Hop" real bad with the short wb.
Battery location was an issue, especially on the 7-1070's, because many were equiped with 70, 75, and equivelent GB loaders. Thanks for the updated post with pics. It's interesting how diverse the conditions can be across the country.
We also used cast front weights rather than rock boxes on the fronts. The only people who bolted something other than cast weights on the front were the Green guys in the form of aux. fuel tanks. That said a lot for their fuel economy.

Interesting, around here in NEIL we didn't have debris problems either. Our '78 1370 served us for 20yrs and never had that issue and it was also the short wheelbase. Don't remember any others around setup like that either. We also mounted the battery boxes like the 90 series on any 70 series we had, except the 8 is still in the original place yet. We also mounted 12"x18"x6" rock boxes on top of the front weights. Good looking 13!
