1370 Powershift

Have a 1370 with an unknown history. When I first tried to get it running it would run for a second or two and die. Moved the powershift to 2 and tractor cranked and ran fine. Would also stall it when the clutch was pressed down. Realized I had a pilot spool sticking. Cleaned them and now all 3 forward speeds work. When in reverse and you let off clutch motor labors hard almost to the point of stalling. Ran a pressure test that the manual has and all clutches are engaging and releasing like they should in all four positions. Wondering if it could be in the control circuit or a internal problem. Thanks.

If all pressures are correct when they should be the most likely culprit causing the engine to labor is a damaged clutch pack in the power shift. More than likely C-3
because of the problem you had before cleaning pilot spools. You might notice a little engine labor in FIRST power shift also. Rod.

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to know if there was anything else in the control valve I might have been overlooking before I go into the transmission. Guess I should mention that it does lug down on a 2 to 1 downshift for a second or two. Its erratic. Sometimes not at all sometimes 2-3 seconds. I just assumed it was the retard valve but the C3 would make sense.

Split the tractor and found C4 clutch facings in the bottom of the transmission. It looks like they came off of the steel as I had four steel plates
instead of two and two and a pile of facings around the suction screen. C1 and C2 look like new. C3 also looks like very little wear however many
were severely warped causing my dragging issue. My main concern is the powershift carrier. The surface is not as smooth as I would expect. It doesnt
seem to be worn down much. Maybe .020" the best I can tell. My question is can I get this surface cleaned up? Is there any wear limit on this
surface. I don"t want to put it back as is I think it might not have the holding power and lead to early failure.

Hopefully some of the powershift experts chime in on this. I’ve went through one but am no expert. My 2 cents is yes the grooves do need faced off somehow. I think they will eat your new discs. As far as if there is enough “meat” to do this..... unless you take off so much that the structural integrity is weakened, I think you would be OK unless there is not enough stroke for the piston in the carrier. Maybe this is something you could mock up and verify first?

I had to get a used reaction plate for mine, it was grooved so badly. I would look in to that maybe. Try Elmers Repair in Kansas.

Matt, a few years back we had a similar situation with a poster named Brokengun, he had a issue just like you describe and he had used an off brand oil instead of Hytran, he lost every lined plate in his tractor, not just the powershift, he replaced every lined plate in the tractor as the oil used caused the liking to unbind from the plates, I do not know your tractors history and not necessarily saying that is the problem but something to think about. Case HYtran is the only oil I will recommend for Case transmissions and hydraulics, 50 years in a Case shop as head mechanic and you see stuff most will never see. If I could not get Hytran I would use JD hygard but others use at your own risk.
