140 farmall

trying to adjust valves on 140. i have a hand crank for a c farmall. it does not work on the 140. ? ? ?
the nub is too long. the ears on the crank will not catch the pulley. hmmm

Assuming you don't ant to modify the crank you have, remove all sparkplugs, and put transmission in highest gear, you should be able to roll tractor to turn crankshaft where it needs to be.

Or, make a simple engine turning tool from a length of rod, cross drill one end for a rollpin, well a nut to the other end, stab in place, use a socket and breaker bar to turn the engine.

Probably best to remove before attempting to start the engine, though!

All I do is grab the fan and use it to turn the engine over. If the fan belt is as tight as it should be the engine should turn over just fine. But one can take the plugs out to make it turn easier. Shoot I have been turning to engine of a TD15B engine over by grabbing the fan blades and turning it over and it has an engine 2 or 3 times bigger then that 140 does and it is a diesel 6 cylinder engine

o k i have fan and radiator off at this time. working on the governor trying to get it to work. had head re worked, valves ground and radiator worked on. adjusting valves for first run.

uh, this machine is 50 or so years old. how do you turn engine to adjust valves. ( i saw one post where , 1) turn engine until intake valve closes, adjust exhaust valve, 2) when exhaust valve closes, adjust intake valve. hmmm

Most engines have a nut on the front pulley. Use your socket, extension, and break-over. gm

When I adjust valves I turn the engine crank so when one valve opens I then adjust the other one in that cylinder. That way I know for sure the valve I am adjusting is as closed as it can be. So when the intake valve is open I adjust the exhaust valve

I was told to do that by a guy who is very likely to be 6 foot under 30 years ago. Back when I was 10 or so I worked for a guy who had shop in Leigh NE. and he showed me that

A Cub hand crank should work but I just turn fan

i am using cub crank, sort of. the uh, uh cross pins, on the crank are not long enough, so i am sticking a screwdriver in there to help

Sounds like to cross pin on the hand cranks have been worn down and or bent. Seen that on many old hand cranks
