My Grandfather and I have a 140 Farmall and I need to find out what year model it is but I can't read the serial number. My Grandfather 80 years old and i would like to fix the tractor up for him. If anyone has suggestion it would be greatly appreciated.

Jerry: You already know the model number, however with a 140 unless you know the serial number, it is just about impossible to give you an exact year. Serial tag is on the left side of clutch housing. If you cant read it try cleaning it with one of those steel wool pads like SOS. Even on very faded tags that will often highlight the actual serial number. Actual serial number is stamped on that tag, all other info not stamped.

Some things were changed over time on the 140.
Early models had a protrusion in the upper nose, later ones were flat all the way up. Also later models had a factory alternator vs generator but some have been changed (upgraded).

Try covering the serial tag with paper and rubbing a pencil lead over it. That has worked for me.

Harold: The engine serial number would be a hard call. Tractor serial number 501 had engine number 65046, and F240 tractor serial number 501 had engine 65032, and I240 tractor serial number 501 had engine 67017. Basically the same sequence of engine serial numbers since the days of 100 and 200, it carried on through 130 and 230 and continued on to 140 and 240. Even after the last 240, engine serial numbers climbed at a faster rate than tractor serial numbers. This was also the case during 100-200 and 130-230 production, more C-123 engines than tractors. There must have been onc squence of engine serial numbers for all C-123 engines after SC and SA1, including stationary engines, swathers, etc.
