140 vs. Cub

Hello,
I am currently farming on a 18 acre farm with
around 2.5 acres in cultivation. I have a 30hp
tractor for tillage and bed shaping. I am looking
at buying a cultivating tractor within the next 6
months to a year. I have worked with a late 40's
Cub and a Super A in the past with much admiration
for what they can do. I have been looking through
Craigslist and Auctions in my area and have come
across a few 140's that have caught my eye. I'm
unfamiliar with this model but seems like the
bigger brother to the Cub.
What would be the advantages or disadvantages to
the 140 over the Cub? The obvious disadvantage
being price. What does the 140 offer that the Cub
does not?
Thanks
Brian

I agree with Don. The 140 is 3 times the tractor in real utility value in your application. It has torque, Horse power, and weight that lets it be effective while not being TOO big to be handy. The cub (at best is 12 hp) is OK for finish mowing, and light cultivation, they are not garden tractors they work. The 140 is a farm tractor. Jim

I would go with a Cub myself, since you have a bigger tractor already
Main thing is a 140 is the newest version of the A. You said you have run both an A and a cub in the past so you should have a preference already

You asked, "What does the 140 offer that the Cub does not?" The answer is usability. If you get a 140 with implements, it will replace your 30 horsepower tractor for tillage and still cultivate. I pull a 2-14 plow and a 5 foot tandem disc with my 140. I also use the 140 to ted hay because the pto is standard, unlike the Cub. For cultivating, a 140 is just like a Cub except it has front and rear lifts, more power so you have more usable ground speeds, and a fast hitch. A fast hitch, if used right, will hook and unhook a plow or disc without you having to get off the tractor. It reduces your ground clearance for cultivating, but can be removed by pulling 4 pins. Personally, I always just keep the fast hitch on unless I am cultivating tall crops. Then I just pop it off, cultivate, and reinstall it. There are some 140s without a fast hitch, but that sort of defeats their purpose (to be a versitile farm tractor).

Don't get me wrong: Cubs are good for certain things, if you know what I mean. My Cub will stay with or outdo my 25 hp lawn mower and it is agile for pulling light wagons. However, anything a Cub can do a 140 can do better.

Strictly for cultivating it probably does not make much difference on 2.5 acres as they are both one row tractors. But from your choices I would get a Super A, because you have more power if you should want to use it for something else. BUT, if it was my decision. I would get a C/Super C/200/230/240. I am not particularly a fan of offsets, possibly because I have one but I prefer the C, etc having used both. Even an H is not too big for what you want to do. The most important thing of all of this is that you need to be sure you can find the cultivators, everything else for only 2.5 acres is insignificant.

If you liked the Super A, you should definitely go with the 140 which is just basicly a newer model of the Super A. The 140will do anything the Cub will do, only three times better.
