I own a yanmar 1401D which ran like a top until I let it sit unused for 3 years. Before attempting to restart it I charged the battery, emptied the fuel tank and filter canister and refilled both with fresh fuel. I then attempted to start the tractor. It cranks over and sounds like its ready to start but wont.

Suggestions to get this 1401 restarted would be appreciated.

Dairyman,

Your information is exactly what I was hoping to find. I'll give the instructions a shot and hopefully be running again.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It is very common for injection pumps in tractors that have water in the fuel to stick when setting. happens A LOT. The injection pump has a tiny plunger on each cylinder that is spring loaded. When the cam pushes them up they squirt fuel. When there is water in the fuel the cylinders rust slightly & the ultra tight tolerances in the pump get too tight. When the plunger goes up it gets stuck and the spring is not strong enough to push it back down. The cam just spins & either does not make any contact with the plungers or just barely moves them & pumps very little fuel.

A tap of a hammer while cranking the engine will frequently "un stick" the plungers & the pump will start to pump fuel again. More serious cases require the pump to be removed & rebuilt.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the additional information, this may come in very useful. I wont get to work on this problem until the weekend but I'll report back if I was successful on getting the tractor restarted. This site is a great resource.

Just a thought, do you have the kill pull cable pushed in? I forget to push it back in when I kill mine and have to scratch my head for a minute or two when I go to restart it a week later.

Okay I'm back up and running again.

I followed the steps for removing air from the fuel lines and also replaced the battery and belt so its now running well. Thanks for everyone's help.

One follow up question. With the tractor running I switch the key to off and the tractor keeps running. Solving this would be great but I would like to know the best method of killing the engine when this run-on happens. Is it best to stall it in gear or to pull the compression release to kill a run-on motor?

Thanks again you guys are a great help

You should shut it down by closing the throttle. If it idles instead of shutting down, change the position of the latch just below the key that blocks the throttle from going all the way to shut-off.

Shouldn't use the compression release and the key just kills electrics not the engine.

Good luck...
