Im just getting set up to sell hay. Found a MF 1440 baler in good shape really cheap. Just wondering if they are a good starter baler and what to look for on it. Also wondering roughly how heavy a bale they make. My plan is to only use it a couple of years till I can afford better. Thanks

good luck on that venture, three things I learned in years try to do that was, is it free, do you deliver and stack away for the dollar. can I pay you in installments or used tires. I made my money in small bales of clean straw to retail outlets, that's what worked for me. no longer do any of it now like already said good luck. as far as large round bales unless net wrap forget selling them

Bought one in 82, makes a nice bale, no major problems over the years-some bearings, rebuild cylinders and lace belts maybe 3 times. Worst fault I have with the machine is plugging the pickup or the open throat, happens worst if a green or damp spot in windrow especially when starting bale. Using a haybine has help greatly and raking and leaving windrow for an hour or two also helps. The 1440 is the same as Vermeer 504G. Besides normal checking of machine-sprockets and chains, belts, pickup turns freely with belt tighter lever down don't know much else off top of my head to check. Oh, if possible power up and check tracking of belts, shouldn't run too far off from center of guides. Grooves in guides are normal, at least has been on mind.
