1456 blow by

Have a 1456 project we bought it runs nice starts good ever in cold weather . but it has a lot of blowby . my question is Could the blowby be coming from any where else besides the rings . just want to explore all options before we do a overhaul . like I was told one time once you start taking it apart diagnosing is over. Thanks

Agree with diagnosing before tear down.
Just a couple thoughts. Is it burning/using oil? Are you adding oil, that is not just leaking out?
How many hours are metered? Has engine reached a mile stone where an overhaul is in the realm of being time for one?
And, has injector pump been all jacked with and adjusted way up from factory specs? If thats the case, I'd adjust it back down to factory settings just to see what happens. You'd probably monkey with that anyways if doing an overhaul. Might as well do it before tear down.

the compression needs to be held on top the piston and under the valves. so most likely is worn cyl's and possibly some from worn exaust guides. but once apart you machinist will have a handle on the head. plus good to know the oil consumption before your tear down. if your burning a gallon a day then yes she would be due for overhaul. the other thing is the cyl's could be glazed and the rings not seating causing this also. slow idling not at operating temp is not good. idle should be 900-1000 rpm. also take her in the field and make it pull hard for 1/2 a day running at operating temp. even if you need to cover the rad some. and see if your oil consumption has changed or got worst. if she's worn out it will be going through more oil. thats your diagnosing.

and one more thing if it has ever had diesel leak into the oil and you had it running cool with thin diluted oil she will glaze the glaze the cyl's. and go through lots of oil.

Not really burning oil. But throwing a lot out of the breather under a hard pull. About 6000 on the Rach for What that's worth. Don't really know much about it bought it with bearing out in the transmission.looks to be a fairly straight and tight tractor got a imp.tag from some where in Oregan on it . after we had the bearing fixed we hauled manure with it a couple days and I don't remember the blowby being there at first. And it starts really good in the cold for the compression to be to far gone

I have a 1456.Easy starting means it's still in pretty good shape.Hauling manure won't get it hot enough.Put in the field in front of a plow for a day.Pull the snot out of it.Report back.

Well here is what i would do . I would do a valve adjustment . Seen this before where the valves were way to loose and had blow by because it was not opening the valves far enough or long enough . Tractor rand good , stated good BUT while running ya had not skeeter problems . Could be broken top rings due to someone usen either . Check pump timing . If she was taken care off she would go a lot more hours . D and DT 361 and 407's have been known to go way up in hours , My personal Rag 806 is over 10000 hours , it was over 6000 when i got it and all i have done sofar to it was adjust the valves , fixed a leaky throttle shaft on the injection pump and replaced the center exhaust manifold due to a low hanging tree limb that my friend did not pay attention to as the 706 would clear with ease by three inches , the 806 sits five inches higher . and replaced the clutch due to taking out the center of the disc. Not to bad for owning it since 1990 .

If it starts well in below freezing conditions (last winter) and clears up to run on all 6 quickly, I would put hours on it before deciding to tear it apart. It costs nothing to run it if it is not a oil burning drama. Use a high quality low ash oil in it, and see if 100 hours makes you wish for a better running tractor. Jim

If the rings are Stuck NOW what will happen is they will NOT unstick but get pounded in deeper from the slap of the piston . Been down this road a lot of miles . My 71 Duster 340 learnt me that one . I went and bought a new 73 Ford F 250 4X4 and got playen with it making it better then the factory had and My Duster sat for a couple weeks . Went and fired up[ one day and was going to go on a date , run to the gas station to fill it and while filling i noticed i had and antifreeze leak so i ran back to the house thinking that oh it's just a hose clamp needs tightened as it was about this time of year . Ah yea NOOOOOOoo it was the soft plug on the back of the right head leaking , great . Will i did not have the time to FIX it as there was two ways of doing it , one was pull the head or two Drop the heater down and out and drill a 21/2 inch hole i the fire wall and install the rubber plug made for the Warranty repair of this problem and that took and hour and ahalf . So i took the pick up and thinking i would get to this in a week or so . Not to happen as my day job went nuts and i was working 18-20 hours a day 7 days a week with no let up . The duster sat till May the next year . When i found this problem i never really got the Duster warmed up since the gas station was a 1/4 mile down the street and drove back a 1/4 of a mile and shut off Then it sat and when i went to work on it i fired it up and it started like always and i went back in the house to get some flat rate Juice and as i came out the door the Duster DIED never to start again . It would crank over , it had spark it had fuel but what was lacking was COMPRESSION from 190-200 PSI compression we were NOW down to 35-40 PSI . When the pistons came out that tiny ridge never touched the rings and the came out by hand . To get the OLD rings out of the grooves it took a hammer and a Chisel and they came out in pieces and of all the rest stuck rings they all come out the same way THEY ARE STUCK .
