1466 knocking help?

The 1466 started to knock today. After mowing weeds for a couple hours. It sounds like it's in the bell housing. But I can't tell exactly. If it's a rod bearing would it rezanate through the crank. Or would the pump/pto drive be more likely. It stays constant with the engine rpm when I depress the clutch and move the tractor around. Any thoughts or suggestions before I go tearing into it would be appreciated. Thanx

First grab the fan and make sure it's not the water pump. Had that put the fear of God in me once.
But the way you describe it it's probably the ipto gear. Pull the mcv to have a look and verify. If it is it's a double split.

Update 1, I got it home it has to do with the hyd. When I hold the level back it changes tone and gets louder.. but the steering wheel nor turning on the pto change the sound.

Well not sayen that this is the problem for sure as i am not there to listen BUT i am thinking that she is just about ready to stop making hyd pressure and no pto . I am betting that the splines on the pressure plate are just about toast and the IDPOT input shaft is getting ready to go to lunch is my guess . And if so then ya need a new clutch pressure plate , pilot bearing and throw out bearing a new IDPTO shaft two seals a new bearing , always change that bearing and a O/Ring and a flywheel reface . Just my guess here so don't hold me to this . YOu may be able to drop the inspection cover under the clutch and with a good light look up at that shaft and see how much rust and shinny metal pieces ya see . Your the first sofar this year there will be two more wright behind you as i am sure someone will be callen me with the same problem .

Well just goes to show you that nice guys finish last I loan?d my 1466 to a tech school last winter to put 6g in the rear end.. I've had it back 4mo and now this happens, while I was letting my neighbor use it to clip his 15 acres of crp. I'm a weekend farmer and have put maybe 50 hrs on it since the rebuild of the rearend. I just wondering if it's mechanical failure/ or personal screw-up? Is the main idea to hurry and yank it apart or is it gonna go boom quickly??

Dpn't know as they do fail , all depends on how much PTO work the tractor has done on that clutch . Now like i said this is what i THINK it is but don't hold me to this as you did not dsay that you had fingers in the rear end LEARNING at your expense . And i have no idea of what all and who was tryen to teach them . SOOOOOOO if they had the rear end apart and iyou did not say there for i have no idea if they had to do a split or not . If it was a rearend carrier replace then they should not have had to split if they had to replace the ring and pinion then they had to split so then they had to or should have dropped the PTo driven gear out and god only knows if they got the shim pac in correctly and if they did not well then all bets are off and you will be looking at a double split . Yes it is a good thing to try and teach young guys to learn how to work on cars trucks tractors and such BUT the teacher can NOT know everything about all that is out there . Same as me i know the I H line from the M's and H's on up to the early 86's inside and out after that Nope not going there ain't doing it I can work on olivers but don't know it all , i can work on some of the A C's but here again don't know it all. I have worked on a hand full of Deeres and i hate to admit to it also David Browns but only under the cover of darkness. I know a Ag teacher at one of the Vo tech schools and he thinks he knows it all and thought he knew how to build a pulling tractor even after he spent 29000 on having a so called expert build him and engine he could never get within 75 to 100 feet of our dumpster diven engine built from junk parts all but the rings bearing and gskt came from dumpsters or grand total including the tractor was under 4000 top tractor around here in all four classes for two year running with four different drivers . So my thinking on this is that when they are going to do something to a persons tractor that gets into stuff that ya need to know what your doing they should have one of the local older mechanics that works on that color iron come in as a coach to look over there shoulder . don't have clue where your from so that sorta rules out a service call.

When it fails, the tractor will not have any hydraulics or PTO. there are splines on the clutch plate that drive the entire "live" features, Assuming The Vet is correct (usually is on these) I would definitely not wait for failure. The noise is in that part anyway, so inspect it as you were told and go from there. Jim

They had it double split new ipto gear, bearings, torque, shims, pumps, gasket sets, brakes, shift linkages. New cluch.pressure plate. Different flywheel. I guess start with pulling the hyd pump. I'm in sw wi, if your close.

Well AH NO i am in N. E. Ohio . So your telling me that they have already been there and done that SO that sorta throws all my ideas out the winder . So if it had a new clutch and pressure plate and new IDPTO already installed then there should not be a problem . So now i guess i would have to drain the oil out of the speed transmission and the sump under the trans brake and drop the cover under the PTO driven gear and start looking . BUT six grand to do what you said wow i was thinking more in the line of ring and pinion and carrier and some new gears in the trans. I had to do the rear end in our 1066 a couple years back and it was trashed big time and i replaced every bearing from the range transmission back alng with other sightly mutilated pieces and parts and even with chasen parts across this fine state we did not have half that in it . SOOOOOO i would be having a long heart to heart talk with that Vo ag teacher . Now i doubt that the hub in the NEW pressure plate is working loose but it could . The other thing here is DID THEY USE the correct IDPTO gear as there was two listed for a 1466 , one was for S/N up to and one was for after S/N .

THAT 6G INCLUDED A HYD HOOKUP REBUILD, NEW HYD PRESSURE REGULATOR, FRONT AXLE REBUILD FROM HUB TO HUB AND ALL NEW LED LIGHTS. WE WENT AROUND ABOUT THE IPTO DIFFERENCE 'CUSE MY TRACTOR BY SER# (1972) SHOULD HAVE HAD THE ONE WE ORDERED BUT WHEN THEY OPENED UP THE REAR END SOMEONE HAD ALL READY SWITCHED OUT THE IPTO AND THE DRIVEN GEAR TO THE NEWER ONES. WITCH SLOWDOWN MY PTO SPEED @2250. SO I'M GOING THE VISIT MY IN LAWS FOR A COUPLE WKS. WHEN I GET BACK WELL HAVE TO DRAIN IT AND PULL THE BOTTOM COVERS.. THANX
