1466 no steering

Bought a 1466 and the PO told me that he overfilled the transmission otherwise the steering dont work. So I drove the tractor and it had a big oil leak in the flywheel housing. So I drained the extra oil from the transmission to the full mark on the dipstick. I removed 6 gallons! But now the steering does not always work and after a minute the tractor stops driving and the light next to the key comes on. What is the correct way to fix the problem? Looks like some internal leak in transmission?

You take the filter assembly out and look to see what the seal looks like inside on the rear end casting in the middle. There's a tube that sucks from the other side and I think if the seal gets shot it doesn't suck good.

Sounds like sucking air somewhere. Easiest check is filter cap oring,is it leaking oil?? remove filter and there will be a jumper tube behind the tin plate after you remove the filter. Make sure the tube is secure in its bore from filter housing to hitch pump. Do rear outlets and hitch work properly?? There is a oring between the transmission and rear housing for the suction feed of the mcv, but lets hope that isn't it. Won't hurt a thing if you run it 5or 6 gallon over full If that don't take care of it then you will need to get gauges on it to check pressures.. After you change the filter you may have to bleed the mcv pump. To bleed, just below the sender unit on the mcv is a plug, uses a 5/8 wrench. Remove and start engine and be ready to shut down. Usually just rolling over engine will bleed it. Oil leak in flywheel housing, will have to split to repair. Over filling should have nothing to do with it leaking, if that's why you drained 6 gallon down.

Both my 1466 and 986 are 5 gals over, it some what common practice on them. When I have another reason to get in them its what I have done.

No oil leak on filter house, but I do need to check the condition of the filter and o ring. The 3 point and outlets work, also when the extra 6 gallons was out. To mee it looks like the leaking into the flywheel housing is related to the overfilling, when I drained the extra oil I drove the tractor and no leak from there. If I cant find the source of the air sucking I might need to split the tractor, replace seal between engine and transmission and then overfill the transmission.

Ok, I will check that after holiday. Going to Rantoul. I will pick up some parts for the tractor when I will be in Usa.

Welp as for the over fill deal , there can be several causes to the Steering issue of not picking up fluid . with out over fill. , one that not many talk about or even thought about is that sometimes the pick up tube in the rear housing can get a crack where the mounting bracket is welded to the tube and she will suck air there . Ya have to keep in mind here that the hitch pump that runs your three point and your remotes is closest to the filter and it draws more oil as if stock it is a 12 GPM pump and the Pump that takes care of the streeing , brakes, T/A and cooling and lube is a 9 GPM pump and it is feather away from the filter and the oil does not have to be PULLED to the pump . So a M C V pump getting a bit weak can be a cause of the problem ,also old tired o/rings not sealing as well as they should . Now as for the bell housing leak that is due to the I D P T O seal leaking and a split is required to address that . To FIX your going to need to do a clutch job due to ware on the spline in the pressure plate being woren along with a new I D P T O input shaft and bearing and Bioth new seals and a O/RING . There use to be and after market oil slinger ya added to the IDPTO shaft before ya installed the new bearing on that shaft to help with this leak problem . I myself need to do this repair on my 806 here real quick . When you do this you will need to reface the flywheel and recut the mounting step to Spec.'s on the flywheel. . Thank you. Looks like a winter job then. Yes some parts might have some wear on them. Tractor has over 20000 hours. It is one of the yellow and white tractors sold to the communist
