148 loader and 3020D

Hello, we have an early 3020 Diesel with hydraulics on the dash and would like to put a loader on it. From my research a 148 loader would be a good candidate?? We would use it to move bales and such, but it wouldn"t be abused.I would like to find a loader with a joystick as the hydraulics on the dash would be a pain to use and we may want to use the hydraulic remotes for other stuff. What would be involved in plumbing the valve directly into the tractor? Any thoughts or suggestions?

You will get some good help on this including pics.
Before then I can tell you that you replace the elbow in front of your right foot with a tee for pressure to your loader valve.
On the left some replace the rockshaft return elbow with a tee for return oil from your loader valve.
I usually just use a ported filter bowl.

Hear are some pics .. To help you with the plumbing...

We just went through this with a 2510 and 48 loader. Supply in front of the brake and return to the filter as pictured. We bought a Brand Hydraulics joystick (10 gpm) and I gotta say it works great. Hopefully my pics uploaded.

Tx Jim's pic is factory. I just drill and tap the original bowl and add a straight oring fitting.
I route the hose under the tractor and over the yoke instead of around behind the tractor.

I drill and tap them too,, you need to be careful and don't tap too deep the fitting will interfere with the filter,, I think the factory one's let oil flow a bit better, but the home made ones work okay..

Side comment, be careful with a big bale on the front and turning quickly, you will break a rim pretty easily.

148 is a nice loader but not quick tach but can be added.I don't care how careful you are large round bales depending on size[some weigh 1100#s and some near 2000#] are known to break the wide front end at knees, spindles or rims.

I have thought about the front end. It has a schwartz wide front on it currently which I do not think would last long at all. I was going to take a wide front off of a 4020 which also has the bigger rims and tires thinking that would be heavy enough. I understand that some things may still break. Unfortuately that is part of having a loader on a tractor :(

No, breaking things is NOT part of having a loader on a tractor. Respect the machine and do not abuse it, and it will give years of trouble free service. My dad had a 148 loader. Part of the time it was on a 4020, part of the time it was on a 3020. We used it to move 1,500# bales, loaded silage all winter long, and even moved dirt occasionally. Nary a day went by that the loader wasn't used. Never broke anything in 20 years.

Over about 25 years, with a 1972 4020 and a 148 loader, the vertical shaft at the bottom of a wide front broke off twice on each side. I considered it a safety issue so I put a used 4630 wide front on it. No breaking problem since. I use the loader almost every day for round bales, loading manure, and pushing and piling brush and small trees. The 148 is a good loader, but with a 4020 or 3020, it should be used wisely.

I would love to plumb back into the reservoir like this picture. Not real fond of tapping into the line by the filter or into the filter canister. I am having problems finding these fittings, though. any help would be appreciated.

thanks for the JD numbers on the feed line, not for the return line.

Since I have no serial numbers anywhere on my 148 loader, does it matter what manual I get?
