1494 PTO grind

I have a new to me 1494. It's been sitting in a shed the last few years.
I've got her back up and running, but I notice that the PTO grinds a bit and gives a little bump when shifting in.
Even with "pausing" for a bit after disengaging the clutch to let things slow down.
Is this just how they are?

Normal. There isn't a brake of any sort on the shaft from the clutch to the pto box to slow the shaft, there will always be a little drag on the clutch disc.

It should get better with use as the flywheel and pressure plate get polished, but never totally goes away.

My 1490 does that every time I engage it.

Yep, normal. Our 1290 shifts in with one small "click" (it's gotten used a lot), but our 1390s all grind a bit. Those all have a similar design for the PTO.
