I am helping a friend with a 1500 tractor with a 2 cylinder Shibuara diesel engine. The owner originally told me that the tractor ran but would not handle a load. I guess the tractor had sat for a few years but they recently took it to a shop to change the fuel, clean the tank, install a new fuel filter and put a new battery in to get started. Not the most reputable shop though.
Here is what I discovered.
I get there and the tractor will not start without choking the heck out of it with my hand over the intake and then removing my hand. It then runs and seems to idles ok and revs OK but if you just drive it with any kind of load it just stumbles all over the place. Seems like a lot of blue smoke. Let the tractor warm up until hot with no change.
Initially there was air in the injector lines. I was able to bleed the filter, pump and then injectors. It seems like every time go to bleed the injectors I get maybe little air and not fuel right away. I am not sure that this is a problem. I am just more used to a constant stream of fuel.
I then check the oil and it was about a quart overfull but had just been changed by a mechanic. The oil did not seemed to be thinned out with diesel so I am not sure the story there yet. Supposedly that diesel pump has a shaft seal that can leak but was not able to confirm there was any diesel leaking into the crankcase yet.
While the tractor was running I bulled the dipstick and motor oil started spewing out the dipstick hole. Seems like this would be caused by excessive crankcase pressure. It has a breather tube that did not appear plugged. I pulled the oil cap and this oil spewing out continued. No sure is that is just the design of the motor or a major blow-by issue.
While the tractor does start(if choked even when warm) and idles good and even revs up does not run good under any type of load and smokes like heck when you drive it. It looks like parts and resources are scarse on this series of tractors. I have read many forums where cracked heads and head gasket issues are common. Many other have mentioned broken or cracked rings and even holes in pistons.
I am looking for advise specific to this tractor and things to test or look for. I do not have a diesel compression gauge but may need to invest in one.
Please let me now your thoughts.
