1500 start problem

I have a real hard time in cold weather starting my 1500. I use a Magnetic Block heater and the starter was replaced last year. Now it just clicks with no movement. If I tap the Starter I get a slight movement on the fan. I just replaced the battery with the same results. Any thoughts?

If your battery is big enough and has enough voltage, 12.6v, (not frozen, a frozen battery only has 50% starting power), you need to troubleshoot your wiring.

I did check power to the solenoid, which was ok, so i assume the solenoid or starter is the issue.

Probably a discontinuity in a wire or terminal involving the key, battery, and starter. Three decades of heat and vibration is hard on wiring.

Until sorted out, at an auto-supply store get a jumper with two wires each with a clip on the end, and a button in the middle. Attach one clip to the battery positive. The other goes on the starter terminal. I don't have a 1500 manual but look for two large terminals on the front of the starter and a smaller, different-looking one likely above them. The latter is the starter terminal. (You might want to remove a side access panel.)

Get on the seat and get it ready to start. Have someone press the button just enough to get it started, then disconnect the jumper.

Try keeping your battery warm, even if you have to remove and store indoors when not in use. I spent a winter in Col. one year and had to store my battery indoors in order to start my car in the mornings in Below Zero weather.

thanks for all the response. I ended up taking the starter off and having it diagnosed. It was toast. The old battery was weak (hated the cold) and the starter was an older rebuilt unit. I think the combination of the two did me in. I had the starter rebuilt (professionally) and bought a new battery It fired up like never before. I think the whole issue started from a battery that I thought was good, who knew. I have to say that this support site did help me in getting to the bottom of it and I thank you guys.
