I just finished installing new clutch pads on the pro on my 1550 Cockshutt. Assembled everything with the same amount of shims that it had. How do I adjust the pro so it doesn’t run all the time, even when disingag

That would depend on which PTO it has. If it's the regular 540 you will need to add shims. The new discs are thicker and the plates are not releasing.
That's what I thought too. Now the question is , how many shims would I have to add. Is there a way of seeing that there are enough shims without having to assemble and try each time the shims are added.

It can spin with nothing attached, a little drag can be normal. Do you have good snap in the lever? Have you added resistance to see if it spins an implement when it's disengaged?

When I got my 1550 the clutch was in bad shape, There were only 23 shims total and the splines were shot. Cheapskate that I am, I had the shaft welded up, filed in the splines and got new discs. Divided up what shims were left and put 1/8 thick hardened washers in with the splines. Miked them to be sure they were all the same. Turned out to be just about right. I think the new ship packs are 1/8 thick.

Well, after I baled 8 bales I tried disengaging the pto and it did disengage but it had heated up and started to smoke. I shut it down for a half hour or so and then kept on baling with no more issues. Hope there are no more hiccups with this. To

You probably need some shims. It got hot because it didn't completely release. You can take out and add without removing the bolts but maybe they wore in enough to free up.

I have the shim kit that I got when I got the clutch plates. Will add some shims today and hoefully that will solve the heating up problem. Thanks for all your help.

In that case I'd say just put the new packs in and start there. The real pain is having to put the cover back on and try it each time. Unless someone here has an easier method.

I’m going to run her with the baler first before adding shims. Since it loosened up some already it may be ok now. Here’s hoping
