1586 engine question

I see that my block is stamped 466 near the engine serial number on the block. I've attached a picture.

I know that the blocks, cranks, and rods are the same, evidently IH just used a different hole in the piston for the pin to make a longer stroke?

I've ordered everything to go back as a DT436. I think there were some 1586s that used a 466 engine, but mine should be a DT436B per the serial number on the block.

Just want to make sure that I don't need to do something different here.

OK, there's my error. Forgot where I read that about the piston pins.

I ordered a parts manual for my engine that should be here tomorrow or Tuesday. I didn't know that it wasn't included in my set.

Measure the stroke closely, don't make the mistake a friend of mine did years ago. He was repairing a 466 engine but the crankshaft kit he got was the shorter stroke 436
engine so the pistons did not rise close to the sleeve top. Engine was completely assembled and would not start due to very low compression with the shorter stroke crank.
So, he got to tear it down again and get the correct crankshft.

This replacement crankshaft was pulled from a 1486 tractor. Pretty sure that I verified it was the same part number as the one that came out which was ruined by spun rod bearing.

But I'm going to check again in the morning.

I know you have already ordered the parts book but
they are both available online. I will say there is a
possibility that IH does not list some of the part
numbers online where your printed copy will have them
all. According to what I read the information you have
heard about some 1586s having the DT-466 is not
correct. In the 1st link for the DT-436 engine you have
to click on ..Complete Machine.. to get to the sections.
On 1-04 in the right column it gives the applications for
the DT-436 engine and under the 1586 it shows the
DT-436 up to engine 100393 as being stamped DT-
436. Those engine serial numbers 100394 and above
stamped as DT-436B. The only 86 series engine the
466 is shown in is the 4386, it is also shown in the
4366. I believe your tractor has a replacement block in
it, I have nothing to prove this theory. Both the 436
and the 466 show the same part number for the
connecting rod so I would agree with your theory
about the compression height ..wrist pin location.. is
just changed in the piston to accommodate the stroke
change.

And FYI if you type 1586 in the search box on the
linked web page you can also get to the parts pages
for your entire tractor.

As for the Dieseltechs story about the guy rebuilding
one that did not bring the piston up to deck height on
TDC, I understand someone working on an engine that
has minimal experience could miss some things.
However not noticing that the pistons do not come
completely to the top of the bore is quite a horrendous
oversight!

I think you're right that my block is a replacement.

The linked parts books show the 436 and the 466 to use the same block in these applications.

No 1586 ever intentionally came off the line at FARMALL with a DT466.

If the 466 stamped into your engine is not just a red herring, that means it was made into a 466 during an overhaul.

Why can I not find the valve stem seals in the parts book? Looks like the 466 uses them?

As Dieseltech points out, the crankshaft is the only thing that can change the stroke. If the same rods are used, the piston pin must be higher in the piston by 1/2 the stroke increase. Jim

Ya can take a 414 and turn it into a 466 with ease with the right pistons and crank . BTDT . Now do you want to make it a standard or later top breather , ya can get more out of a top breather . Wonderful engine and the sky is the limit .
