1600 transmission lube pump

A friend of mine sent me this pic of a 1600 that clearly shows a chain driven trans lube pump coming off the input shaft. I thought that lube pumps on most 4 didgits were driven off of the back end of the countershaft in transmission? I have only had covers off of 1650 and 2-70 and do not recall this chain drive, but maybe its just my memory getting the best of me? Maybe just an early version of pump drive that was updated at some point? Seems kinda hokey to have a roller chain inside the rear end, or are they all driven like this and I am losing it?
