165 For Salvage

I called the number in an ad in last weeks paper for a 165 which was amongst a whole bunch of other farm equipment. Sounds like the guy that placed the ad was just selling the equipment for the estate. Anyway, he tells me that it is all there and I think it runs but needs clutch work. Would also need all rubber etc. They he goes on to tell me that he believes that the maintenance was done very poorly or not at all and that even though the hours were low he would consider it more for salvage than repair. At that point I decided I wasn't interested unless it was REALLY cheap. They are taking bids and he told me they have an $1800 bid on it. There is also a 265 which has a $2000 bid on it but he indicated that it was in much the same shape.
I know these sell for a whole lot more than that when in good working order but $1800 for a salvage machine seemed pretty high to me.

I'm thinking more like $500-$800 bucks.

I dunno Inno. This guy might be some sort of self appointed conisuer, everything that worked for a living is now junk to him. I am now thinking everything that is complete and rolls is worth nearly a grand, but the rear tires are bad? Or just according to him? I am using the 65 I bought months ago a bit more lately, they are impressive. If it is something you can tear appart and repair over time- and buy tires for after awhile, I would take another look. You'd have to ask or wait to see what other guys say about the 200 series, I'm not allowed to own anything that new....

I'm with LJS30, $500-$800 is the most I would likely have offered. Seems others think it's worth more and that is fine, they can have it. I didn't go and look at it, I would have if the price had been lower........I know I know, what do I expect? One day I'm going to be in the right place at the right time with just enough money in my pocket.

The tractors take to the scrap yard will bring more then $1000.00 across the scales. MF 165's will bring $1250-1850.00 for salvage and 265's will be $1850-2500.00 for salvage. I buy tractors every day and when I can buy one cheaper than that am pleased but that hardly ever happens any more.

Listen and learn grasshopper. LJS lives in the land of wall to wall tractors- and no rust, no real winter. You, on the other hand live in the land of no bargains.
On the other hand, I bet no one bid 1800 loonies. Call his bluff, offer quite a bit less, see what they say.
BTW, drove my 65 again today. You would love one of these things....

True Tony, very true. Over here in Southern California the big tractor for the enthusiast is the Ford 8N, 9N, and Powermaster series. However it's hard finding Massey Ferguson's out here.
On another note I just finished repairing the throttle on my 165 and it has some real guts now. I'm really beginning to believe this might be my best tractor.

Stop it you guys.........just stop it...........lol
I probably would find a 165 useful and maybe someday I will find out but it's just not in the cards for me right now. It is true I am in the land of no deals but when I'm ready to make a serious purchase I will also be willing to drive a fair distance to do so.

Hey Tony I have a 290 and let me tell you it's a pretty good tractor also. Actually it's my main work horse and has a lot of power. Right now it's been out of service due to hydraulic issues but should be back to me soon. If you can get one with low hours jump on it.

Did you see a pic of it? What if this guy is just going by looks and mechanically the tractor is sound?

The first, best, awesomest Ferguson F40 I ever saw was on the side of the road in central cal, Oakdale? Between Sonora and the highway rt 99? A couple grand. where Inno is in the wild Canadian bush, a clunker is a couple grand. I just think this series of tractor are worth the effort, the Cont.z175 gas or just the extra traction, they are not a lemon. And how you doing with your projects? agh, let's not hyjack inno's thread, he is busy buying a tractor off the estate guy....

Don't worry about hijacking my thread, I was just looking for some vindication. I think I got that.........There are some deals to be had here occasionally, I just have to be in the right place at the right time. Just need to save a mitt full of cash for when it happens.
