165 front pump

hi i have a 1967 mf-165 diesel with a front pump to run the loader. what i was wondering is would that front pump run a woodsplitter or ii it most likely just a single stage pump. thanks RICK

Yes, it would run a log splitter. The purpose of a 2 stage pump on an engine driven log splitter is to speed up the cycle. It goes faster at a low pressure and when it needs more pressure, it slows down. To run a single stage pump like you say, would require a much bigger engine in order to keep the cycle speed up. Your front pump on the tractor would be much faster because it is a higher GPM pump and has enough power to not slow it down too much under load. You would have to have the right hydraulic valves to run it though. Dave

what i had in mind was tapping into the oil reservoir that is in the loader frame maybe close to where the valve sets to operate the loader install a couple quick disconnects and run 2 hoses back to the splitter cylinder. then i can just take the existing pump and motor off the valve that operates the splitter is already in place.i dont do alot of splitting wood maybe 4 or 5 pickup loads a year seems like i spend alot of time keeping the motor and pump maintained. for no more than i really use it. does this sound like it would work. thanks RICK

You would be best to go to a good hydraulic shop and tell them what you want to do. You need to know the GPM and pressure of your hydraulic system and also if the existing valve on the log splitter is rated for the GPM your pump puts out. Dave
