I recently bought a 1650 that had set for a long time. Spent a lot of time getting the junk out of the gas tank, giving it an in-line filter, and cleaning up the carb. Starts up and runs beautiful, but after a short time acts like it's running out of fuel. Checked to make sure the bowl vent isn't obstructed, and that the float and valve seem correct. But the last time it quit I removed the carb to find the float chamber less than half full. Should this tractor have a fuel pump? Admittedly the tank is close to empty, but not that low. Any ideas?

I don't know if this applies here but a lot of tanks have standpipes. It is possible that yours has rotted to the point where it has broken off. It would take a very pristine tank for crud not to catch at the outlet and any foreign material in new fuel likewise if it has broke off. It may take more than compressed air to move a chunk of solid material out.
I never heard of the older Olivers with gas having a natural feeding issue and never saw any Fleetlines or newer with fuel pumps.

My 1650 gas has a fuel pump, but it was added later.More gas does seem to make it run better.Inline filters love to plug,i had one on mine and after the 3rd replacement i left it off.

My 1650 also had a fine mesh screen above the sediment bowl make sure that is not causing a restriction. I added an in line filter and like Larry said they get restricted quickly, mine gets changed twice a year or whenever the tractor starts starving for fuel.

I don't believe it's the filter,( just put it on), I'm sure it's not the cap, and I can look into the tank and see the outlet, no screen.. Next up is the sediment bowl valve. When I get it figured out, I'll share it with you.

OK, call me stupid. went to drain the tank and the fuel wouldn't pass through the filter. Put another new one on and it works fine. Only got a half hour work before it plugged. Looks like I'll be changing a lot of filters for awhile. I may be stubborn, but I've used inline filters since my 5 yr. old help me fill the tank with sticks, got tired of cleaning the fibers out of the carburetor.

Had the same problem with my 1600. Just enough crap in the tank to plug one filter after another. I went to the auto parts store and bought a brass fitting that would screw into the tank. I J.B.Welded a 1 1/2" piece of brake line to it, so it sticks up inside the tank. That way all the stuff on the bottom of the tank stays there. Just refuel before you get down to 1/8 tank.
