Thinking of buying a 1983 Ford 1710 with 820 hours on it does anyone know of any major problems with these tractors. It is a shuttle shift and comes with a 6 ft ford finish mower and back blade for $4500. Is this a good asking price also? From the pictures it looks to be in very good condition.

820 hrs is barely broke in

cut's hold their vlue pretty decently.. I'd offer 4k$

i've not heard of any major endemic problems to that model.

How many digits on the hour meter? Some of the older tractors like my Kubby only went to 999. My Kubby says 7xx but it's really 27xx at a minimum - I have flipped it twice and I bought it used. That said - original motor with absoloutley nothing ever done to it but glow plugs - still running albeit getting a tad on the soft side. Those little 3 cylinder diesels just keep on ticking. Might also want to check parts availability - IIRC parts for that model are getting quite hard to find.

I have a 1980 Ford 1900, and a friend down the street has a 1910. Both are essentially the same as the 1710, just a smaller engine. Neither one of us has had a problem, with the exception of the ignition key's breaking off last year, and my glow plugs finally died about a week ago. I'd get another, or a 1700's type in a heartbeat. As for the price, here in NH prices for tractors are erratic at best, but for myself, I'd say it was a decent buy. The thing I like best is that there is no "stuff" like hoses, linkage or dangling parts under these tractors. I commented to the New Holland dealer at on the the fairs last fall about this on the new NH's specifically the 8N clone they're now selling. His comment, and I quote, "That would be problem only if you were going to use it in a field."
