172 Camshaft info needed

My 57 850 172 cid recently broke the camshaft - along with all the gears back to the hyd pump - which was the culprit. The pump shaft broke and... To my question the cam thrust plate also broke and these are not available. So I made one out of mild steel. The original is cast iron - any thoughts as to how my new steel one will hold up wear wise? Maybe make a bronze thrust washer?

Not sure on how it will wear but if it was me I'd try and find a used original, there were probably millions almost of these engines built so a salvage yard or used parts dealer should be able to get one. I also believe the 134 and 192 engines use the same part.

What Greg posted! One of hte best things about our old Fords is that so many models shared the same engines for so many years.

I do have a camshaft. i will dig it out and take pics in a while

I got my 860, not running, years ago with a broken cam shaft nose. This summer I had to take it back apart due to a cam gear issue.

Be warned, the original timing gear/cam shaft was a slip fit, held together with a bolt. The new set up, the gear is a shrink fit onto the cam, and secured with a snap ring.

I cannot be sure, but I believe when I got the new cam and gear for the original repair they gave me the new style cam and the old style gear. I did not know any better, so I slipped the gear on, put on the snap ring, and ran it for 10 plus years. Then I got this little tic, tic, tick sound when warm at idle. Kept getting louder over the next 5 years. The it suddenly stopped running. The woodruff key sheared off. The slots in the gear and on the cam were worn from the gear moving back and forth on the cam at idle.

Make sure the gear you get is a press fit for the cam you have. My cam nose was 1.0022, the new cast iron timing gear bore was 1.0000"

Good Luck
