1720d Head gasket?

So I believe my hard starting is a combination of a failed head gasket as well as thermostarter.Needless to say I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row as far as everything here when I start.I will have the head checked ad more then likely decked when its off.Is there a kit with all the gaskets ill need available?I will also be replacing the alternator belt as well as water pump when I have it apart.Any suggestions on what else I should be doing while I have this ole girl apart?Thanks Aaron

I would say head gasket and probably valve cover gasket would be the bare minimum. You can get away with just those if you can leave all of the other parts bolted to the head. The head will be much easier to handle if you removed the muffler at least so you would want that gasket also. Basically, anything you remove to make the head easier to handle (intake, water pump, etc) will probably need a gasket when going back together.

Not intending to hijack thread. I am doing similar work to my engine. Do the experts recommend reusing head studs or replacing them?

No expert, but my opinion is the head bolts are reusable on the 1720. Some of the F series and maybe others do use one time head bolts.

Always good to clean threads on bolts and in block to assure smooth running. Clean or not clean has an effect of torque accuracy.

Are the 1720d heads known to be prone to cracking? I more then will take the head to have it decked.

I don't think the 1720 is any more prone than most other models. My years of following the Yanmar forums indicates most times a blown head gasket and most times caused by over heating. These little diesels do no like to over heat. Not saying your head can't be cracked. Might consider checking it closely for warped with a good straight edge and go from there.

Well I just ordered all the necessary gaskets an then some.Im hoping to get to removing the head prior to the superbowl today.Im not sure what time frame it is t get it apart though.I ordered the service manual as well.Any idea if this is a interference or non interference motor.I ask this to know what would is the max I can shave if its not flat.

It is an interference engine and I have seen pictures of valve imprints in the top of pistons. However, I have no idea what the allowed milling is. Curious as to which service manual the are sending you?

Pretty sure it will be for the closest US sold model. No service manuals available in English for the greys that I'm aware of. I'll guess the 220/226 manual is what you will get.
